No. 21 Camels battle Coastal to 1-1 draw

CU outshoots the Chants 16-8

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – No. 21 Campbell and Coastal Carolina battled to a 1-1 draw Monday at the Eakes Athletics Complex.

The Camels out-shot the Chanticleers 16-8 but could not grab a second goal.

"Our guys were disappointed that we didn't get the win, but at the end of the day, it's early in the season," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "We need to learn to be more clinical in and around the goal and clean up some mistakes at the back."

Gerard Broussard put Campbell (3-0-1) in front in the 50th minute off Tyler Young's assist.  However, Coastal (2-1-1) equalized just 3:03 later and held on for the draw.

Young dribbled free in the box near the goal line and squared the ball in front to Broussard, who volleyed in his second strike of the season.

Minutes later, Campbell failed to clear the ball at the top of its area.  Lucio Berron struck a dipping shot that rebounded off the crossbar to Alvaro Garcia-Pascual, who then scored on right-footed effort from just outside the box when the ball caromed off the bar and in.

Twice down the stretch the Camels had clear chances to win the game.  In the 73rd minute, Kyoji Hata struck a free kick from 28 yards out that curled over the wall and forced Coastal keeper Joey Batrouni to deflect over his bar.

Jalen James dribbled into the Chants box in the 85th minute, but Batrouni left his feet to make a diving save.

A scoreless first half produced a near miss for both teams.  In in the eighth minute, Garcia-Pascual broke in 1-v-1 with Camel keeper Sean Ellis behind the Camel back line, but his right-footed shot was well wide of the right post.

Six minutes later, Daniel Hernandez beat Batrouni, but not the right post on the other end.

NOTES:  Campbell stands 15-0-2 all time in matches when 2021 Big South offensive player of the year (and '22 preseason offensive POTW) Tyler Young has at least one point, including a 2-0-1 mark this season… The Camels stand 27-2-5 in their last 34 matches at the Eakes Complex… Under 8th-year head coach Dustin Fonder, Campbell is 42-17-6 in Buies Creek… Campbell has not trailed in its first four matches… The Camels return to action Friday in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Old Dominion…
