HIGH POINT, N.C. –
Anthony Dell'Orso and
Ricky Clemons scored 18 points apiece to lead Campbell to a 72-64 win over High Point Wednesday at the Qubein Center.
Jay Pal added 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor and
Laurynas Vaistaras 10 for the Camels (9-12, 4-5) who shot 54 percent in the second half and made eight more free throws overall (18-25) than High Point attempted (7-10).
Zack Austin led High Point (10-11, 2-7) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Bryson Childress and Ahmard Harvey contributed 12 points each for High Point, which lost for the 10th time in the last 12 games.
Campbell used a late 12-2 run to take the lead for good, then knocked down 9-of-11 free throws in the final 1:57 to seal the win. Pal's 3-point play gave CU its largest lead (66-57) with 1:57 to play, but High Point was unable to draw closer than six the rest of the way.
Clemons added a season-high 10 rebounds from his guard spot and dealt three assists with no turnovers in 35 minutes. Dell'Orso scored in double figures for the third-straight game by making 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line.
Campbell committed a season-low six turnovers and finished with a 13-3 edge in points off miscues. The Camels also hounded the Big South's third-leading scorer – Jaden House (18.5 ppg) – into a 3-of-11 shooting night and nine points below his average.
High Point jumped to an early 16-7 lead and held a 19-11 advantage after Childress made his fourth three-pointer in the first 11:06. However, Campbell allowed the Panthers to score only two points over the final 5:00 of the period and led 30-28 at the half.
After Harvey made two free throws with 7:36 to play and put the Panthers on top 51-49, Dell'Orso knocked down a corner three to start the decisive 12-2 burst. HPU made only three shots from the floor over the last 5:00 of the game.
Campbell shot 46 percent overall (25-54) and made 4-of-18 threes (4-of-8 in the second half). Despite being out-rebounded 39-30, the Camels finished with a 13-8 edge in second-chance points and outscored High Point in the paint by a 40-28 margin.
High Point finished 24-of-59 (.407) from the floor, made 9-of-32 (.281) beyond the arc.
NOTES:
- The Camels won back-to-back games for the first time this season and improved to 3-2 on the road in Big South play.
- Campbell has won 4-straight games in the series, marking the Camels' longest win streak against the Panthers since re-joining the Big South in 2011-12. CU is 2-0 all-time at the Qubein Center, which opened in 2021-22.
- The Camels return to Gore Arena Saturday for a 2 p.m. start vs. league leader UNC Asheville.
