Fighting Camels host two first-time opponents this week

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Camels welcome first-time opponents Drexel and Delaware to Eakes Athletics Complex this week in their bid to move up in the conference table.

On Thursday, the Camels (2-5-5, 0-3-4) welcome the Drexel Dragons (5-6-2, 1-4-2), who sit two spots ahead of them in the CAA standings. The Dragons went 1-1 last week, with a win against Charleston and a loss to Monmouth.

The Delaware Blue Hens (3-4-6, 0-2-5) take on the Camels on Sunday. They tied both Northeastern (1-1) and Charleston (0-0) last week, and they sit only one spot ahead of Campbell in the conference standings.

Each game will also feature special recognitions from the Campbell student-athletes. Thursday is their Breast Cancer Awareness Day, and Sunday is their Salute to Service.

Series History: This is the first ever matchup for the Fighting Camels and the Dragons. They are one of five first-time opponents for the Camels this season (Stony Brook, Northeastern, Delaware, Monmouth).

Scouting the Opponent: The Dragons are two spots above the Camels in the CAA standings with a record of 5-6-2 (1-4-2). Last week they played two home games, a 1-0 victory over Charleston and a 1-0 defeat to Monmouth. Drexel holds a 1-4-1 record in home games this season. Fifth-year senior Annalena O'Reilly leads the team in shots on goal, goals, and points so far. She was last year's CAA Midfielder of the Year. She is paired with Delaney Lappin, the reigning CAA Attacking Player of the Year after scoring a school-record 12 goals. They are coached by last year's CAA Coach of the Year Ray Goon in his 27th season at the helm. He has been the coach since Drexel restarted their women's soccer program in 1996.

Series History: This is the first ever matchup for the Fighting Camels and the Blue Hens. They are one of five first-time opponents for the Camels this season (Stony Brook, Northeastern, Drexel, Monmouth).

Scouting the Opponent: The Blue Hens enter game week with their last win coming against Saint Francis on August 31. They have recorded ties in four of their last five matches and sit just one spot above Campbell in the conference standings with five points. Constanze Viehmann leads the team with two goals on the year, and Kyla Burns has recorded 31 saves while allowing only two goals in nine games (.939 save percentage). The Blue Hens are led by first-year head coach Kelly Lawrence. She was a volunteer assistant coach at Penn State last year and an associate head coach at Boston University from 2019-22. She played collegiately at Indiana University (2006-10).

Last Time Out: Campbell and UNCW played to a nil-nil draw in the 17th edition of the Cape Fear River Derby. The Seahawks out-shot the Camels 10-8, but each team recorded two shots on goal. UNCW held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2. Campbell's back line of Laney Peabody, Riley Terrill, and Meghan Bernetti played all 90 minutes in the match.

 

First Year in CAA: Campbell begins its first season as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association after spending the previous 12 seasons as a member of the Big South. In that time, the Camels amassed 73 conference wins and won the conference tournament in 2020-21.

 

Back-to-back Regular Season Champs: Campbell finished the 2022 regular season unbeaten in conference play with a 7-0-2 record and earned back-to-back conference regular season titles for the first time in program history. It marked the third time in program history the Camels finished the conference regular season slate unbeaten having previously achieved it in the A-Sun conference in 1995 (8-0-2) and 2004 (7-0-3).

In the Record Book: Redshirt senior Amber Liston has moved into ninth place in program history for career shots. She needs to play in four more matches to move into the top-10 in program history for total matches played.

Homefield Advantage: Campbell is 28-6-6 in home games dating back to the 2019 season, outscoring opponents 108-34 in that span. The Camels finished the 2022 season unbeaten at home with a 7-0-1 record.
