BUIES CREEK – Campbell couldn't complete the series sweep and dropped the series finale to Rutgers 16-3 Sunday at Jim Perry Stadium. The Rutgers scoring came on only nine hits, as Campbell pitching issued 11 free passes during the game.
The Camels drop to 2-1 on the year, while the Scarlet Knights earned their first win to move to 1-2.
Cade Boxrucker struggled with command from the start, issuing four walks in a four-run first inning, and six total across his 1.2 innings of work. The junior was tagged with the loss.
Ernie Day worked 5.1 innings in his first action for Campbell, allowing five runs, three earned.
Peyton Brown and
Jake Murray were each tagged with three runs in the ninth.
Trailing 5-1, Campbell got on the board in the second after
Jarrod Belbin grinded out a 10 pitch at-bat for a bases loaded walk. But Campbell struggled to get the big hit, leaving the bases loaded twice and grounding into two inning-ending double plays. Twelve Camels were left on base during the game.
A pair of redshirt freshman had big days in their first collegiate action.
Andrew Schuldt went 2-3 and drove in a run in the eighth in the first start behind the plate of his career.
Jonah Oster hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the ninth in his first collegiate at-bat.
Campbell returns to action for a marquee matchup with No. 11 East Carolina Tuesday night in Buies Creek. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
