Radford holds off Camels 67-65

Clemons leads CU with 21 points, Pal adds 5th double-double

RADFORD, VA. – Kenyon Giles came off the bench to score 14 points and Radford held off Campbell 67-65 Saturday at the Dedmon Center.

The Highlanders (18-18, 12-6) survived a late Camel charge despite shooting just 39 percent on the day.  Radford made 18-of-25 free throws and finished with a 40-33 advantage on the boards.

Ricky Clemons led Campbell (13-17, 8-10) with 21 points and had a chance to tie the game with 3 seconds to play from the free throw line.  The fifth-year senior made the first of 3 foul shots, but his second attempt rimmed out.  Clemons missed the final shot deliberately, but Radford's Justin Archer pulled down the rebound to preserve the lead.

Anthony Dell'Orso added 16 points and seven boards, while Jay Pal chipped in 15 points, plus a career-high 12 rebounds.  Laurynas Vaistaras contributed 10 points for the Camels, who shot 46 percent from the floor, but made only 4-of-16 threes and 13-of-24 (.542) from the line.

Campbell will be seeded seventh in next week's Big South Championship and take on 10th seed Presbyterian in Wednesday's 8 p.m. first-round game at Bojangles' Arena in Charlotte.  The winner will advance to face second-seeded Longwood in next Friday's 6 p.m. quarterfinal.

The Camels dropped their final three road games of the season by a total of eight points.  CU fell 77-73 in double-overtime at Gardner-Webb on Feb. 11 before losing 95-93 Wednesday in OT at Winthrop.

On Saturday, Campbell trailed by 12 late in the first half, but rode a 10-0 run to take a 42-40 lead on Clemons' three-point play with 14:32 remaining.  Consecutive threes by Giles and Ibu Yamazaki put the Highlanders ahead 57-50 with 6:28 to play and Radford led 63-56 after Shaquan Jules' lay in with 1:31 left.

However, Clemons wrapped four free throws around a left corner three to pull the Camels within 64-63 with 48.3 seconds to play.  After Archer made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 14.7 seconds left, the Highlanders fouled, rather than allow CU to attempt a game-tying three.  Clemons made the second of two from the line with 10.6 seconds remaining, while DaQuan Smith did the same at the other end to set up the final sequence.

Coming off a career-high 34-point outing at Winthrop, Clemons made 6-of-13 from the field and 8-of-13 from the line Saturday, while dealing three assists with no turnovers in 38 minutes.  Pal scored 13 of his 15 points after intermission and surpassed his previous high of 11 boards set Dec. 7 at Evansville.

The Big South's leading freshman scorer at 11.8 points per game, Dell'Orso stretched his double-figure scoring streak to six games and averaged 18.2 over that span.

Jules, Josiah Jeffers and Onyebuchi Ezeakudo contributed nine points apiece for Radford (18-13, 12-6), which ended a three- game losing streak and will be the third seed in next week's Big South Championship.
The Highlanders used a 13-2 run midway through the first half to build a 31-19 lead after Shaquan Jules completed a 3-point play with 5:37 left.  However, the Camels held RU without a field goal the rest of the period and trimmed the margin to 36-29 at the break.
