Men's Hoops heads to Longwood for Saturday matinee

Camels have won 3-straight Big South road games

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After winning three of its last four, Campbell travels Saturday to face defending Big South champ Longwood for a 2 p.m. tip at Willett Hall.

Campbell stands alone in 6th place in the Big South standings, just two wins out of 3rd, which Longwood shares with Gardner-Webb.

Saturday's game will air on ESPN+ as well as an audio stream available at GoCamels.com via The Varsity Network.

The Camels (10-13, 5-6) shot 59.5 percent from the floor Wednesday night in a 78-66 victory over USC Upstate.  Ricky Clemons led CU with 17 points and 5 assists, Anthony Dell'Orso added 16 points, while Devon Dunn and Juan Reyna came off the bench to contribute 14 each.

Longwood (15-9, 7-4) dropped its 3rd-straight game Wednesday when Winthrop's Kasen Harrison scored at the rim in the final seconds to lead the Eagles to a 76-74 victory at Rock Hill, S.C.  Winthrop trailed by 17 at halftime, but shot 70 percent in the second half, including 8-of-11 threes after the break.  DA Houston led five Lancers in double figures with 14 points, while Leslie Nkereuwem and Walyn Napper added 13 each.

On Jan. 31 at Buies Creek, Longwood jumped to a 23-3 lead and never trailed in a 67-42 win over Campbell.  Isaiah Wilkins, Napper and Michael Christmas led the Lancers with 11 points each, while Longwood forced 21 turnovers.  Jay Pal, Anthony Dell'Orso and Mason Grant led Campbell with 7 points apiece.

NOTES:
  • Campbell has matched its longest road win streak ever against Big South opponents (3 games).  The 2021 Camels won their last two regular season road contests + the Big South semifinal at Radford.  Campbell also won 3-straight on the road in 2012.  CU's longest road win stretch in league history is 5 games (1996 ASUN).
  • Campbell stands 4-6 on the road this season, 3-2 at Big South teams.  Longwood is 9-2 overall at Willett Hall, 4-1 vs. league opponents at home.
  • Jay Pal is scoring at an 11.3 clip vs. the Big South and has raised his season scoring average to 10.3 after chipping in 13.8 points over the last 4 games.
  • Fifth-year senior Ricky Clemons leads the Camels - and ranks 9th in the Big South Conference - with a 13.3 scoring average.  Anthony Dell'Orso (10.6) is the 2nd-leading freshman scorer in the Big South, 20th overall.  Jay Pal (10.3) and Devon Dunn (9.3) also contribute at least nine points per outing.  Jesus Carralero averaged 10.6 points over the first five games, but has missed the last 18 due to injury.
  • Longwood is led by preseason all-conference pick Isaiah Wilkins, who ranks f14th in the league in scoring (12.3) and 8th in rebounds (5.6).  Southern Miss transfer Walyn Napper (10.0) and graduate DeShaun Wade (9.7) rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in scoring on a team where 10 players average at least 10 minutes per game.
  • As a team, Longwood leads the Big South in rebounding (+3.88) and turnover (+2.33) margin.
  • Longwood has won 4-straight and 5 of the last 6 meetings with the Camels.  LWU is 9-5 all-time against Campbell at Willett Hall.
  • Seven of the last eight contests between the Camels and Lancers have been decided by 10, or fewer, points.
  • After sweeping last year's Big South regular season and tournament titles, the Lancers were chosen as the '22-23 league preseason favorites, collecting 16 of a possible 20 first-place votes.
  • Isaiah Wilkins (1st team) and DeShaun Wade (2nd team) were named to the preseason all-conference squad.
  • Six Longwood players - Isaiah Wilkins (Virginia Tech/Wake Forest), DeShaun Wade (East Carolina), Zac Watson (UC Riverside), Walyn Napper (Southern Miss), DA Houston (College of Charleston) and Michael Christmas (James Madison) - began their careers at other Division I schools.
  • The late Jerome Kersey, a 17-year (1984-2001) NBA veteran, was a two-time Division II All-American at Longwood from 1980-84.  He made two trips to the NBA finals with the Portland Trail Blazers (1990, 1992) and won an NBA title as a member of the 1999 San Antonio Spurs.
  • Other notable Longwood alumni include 12-year MLB veteran Michael Tucker ('93), 18-year LPGA tour member Tina Barrett ('88), singer/songwriter Jason Mraz and Eva Mae Fleming Scott ('47), the first woman elected to the Virginia senate.
  • Longwood was founded in 1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, later became Longwood College (1949-2002) and gained university status in 2002.  The school first admitted male students in 1968 and became fully coeducational in 1976.
  • Following Saturday's game, the Camels host High Point Wednesday (Feb. 8) at 7 p.m.
