ROCK HILL, S.C. - Campbell opened up Big South play with a doubleheader sweep over Winthrop Saturday at Terry Field.
Campbell improves to 19-8, 2-0 on the year while Winthrop drops to 17-11, 0-2.
Game One - Campbell 2, Winthrop 1
Campbell scored two runs in the fifth, Isabella Smith struck out 10 batters in relief and Campbell defeated Winthrop 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Eagles put one run on the board in the first inning as a bases loaded error allowed one run to score.
Savannah White knotted the game on a solo homer in the fifth while Madilyn Gillespie drove in the go-ahead run later that same inning.
Winthrop threatened in the bottom half of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with one out before Alyssa Henault caught a line drive at second and flipped it into a double play to get out of the jam.
Campbell collected nine hits overall as Henault went 3-for-4 and White went 2-for-3.
Isabella Smith (11-6) entered in the second and tossed the remaining six innings in relief, striking out 10 batters and allowing just two hits.
Reese Basinger (9-6) tossed all seven innings for the Eagles, giving up nine hits and two earned runs.
Game Two - Campbell 6, Winthrop 3
Makayla McClain, Allyiah Swiney and Delaney McDilda each drove in two runs as Campbell picked up a 6-3 win over Winthrop in the second game of the doubleheader.
Campbell went ahead in the fourth inning as Swiney reached on a fielder's choice, allowing a speedy Charlie Montgomery to score from third. McClain drove in two runs in the fifth inning on a hit to center field while a solo shot from McDilda made it 4-0 in the top of the sixth.
Winthrop made it a one-run game in the sixth behind a Macy McCall three-run homer. The Camels answered as Swiney connected on a RBI single to center field while McDilda took a bases loaded walk.
All nine batters in Campbell's lineup earned a hit, totaling 12 for the team in total. Henault, Gillespie and Claudia Ware provided two hits each for the Camels.
Smith (12-6) earned the start for the Camels, striking out 10 batters for the second time on the day, while allowing just three hits and no earned runs.
Sydney Boulware (7-3) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up 10 hits and three earned runs in 5.2 innings.
Campbell returns tomorrow at 1 PM for the final game of the series against Winthrop.
