ROCK HILL, S.C. - Campbell came up short of a Big South opening series sweep, falling 4-0 to Winthrop Sunday at Terry Field.
Campbell falls to 19-9, 2-1, having its six-game win streak snapped, while the Eagles improve to 18-12, 1-2.
Winthrop took a 1-0 lead after Ansley Lee hit a leadoff homer in the fourth. The Eagles added to their lead in the fifth when Macy McCall knocked a three run homer.
Delaney McDilda led the Camels at the plate, going 2-for-3 while Makayla McClain went 1-for-3 with a double.
Reese Basinger (10-6) tossed all seven innings for Winthrop, allowing three hits and striking out nine.
Howald (6-3) allowed no hits through the first three innings and allowed just one earned run overall while striking out six.
After winning the first two games over Winthrop on Saturday, Campbell has now claimed eight straight Big South series dating back to last season.
The Camels return to action at home Wednesday in a 5 PM game against Queens before hosting Big South preseason favorites USC Upstate in a weekend series starting Saturday.
