Camels down Radford 15-4 in Big South opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell outscored Radford 9-2 in the second half, starting Big South play with a 15-4 win at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Campbell moved to 5-4 on the season, starting its Big South schedule with a win for the seventh straight season, while Radford dipped to 3-6 overall after its conference opener. The win also moved CU to 8-0 all-time against the Highlanders in regular season matchups.

The Camels led 6-2 at the half following a scoreless second quarter, with Rasa Welsh's three goals and an assist leading the charge.

After a 26:38 scoreless stretch, Radford broke the drought with 6:10 remaining in the third period on an Ashlyn Grogan score. CU answered with eight straight goals, outscoring the Highlanders 9-2 in the second half.

Welsh scored a game-high six points with a career-best five goals to go with an assist, adding four ground balls and three draw controls. Ally Heath also posted five points on three goals and two assists, while Joslin Hanbury tacked on three points on a goal and two assists, also causing three turnovers. Sam Bischoff and Grace Tompkins also recorded two points each.

Shae Fitzgerald also tallied three caused turnovers with four ground balls and an assist, while Rebekah Taylor and Chandler Stewart notched three ground balls and two caused turnovers apiece.
Campbell outshot Radford 37-12 on the night, owning the edge in ground balls (29-17) and draw controls (15-8).

Grogan paced Radford with a goal and an assist, while Laura Ferko picked up four ground balls. Olivia Hunter made 18 saves on 33 Campbell shots on goal.

Next up, the Camels continue their Big South schedule, traveling to Furman on Saturday, April 1. CU returns home on April 8, hosting Wofford.
