No. 14 Campbell evens series with No. 17 Coastal

BUIES CREEK – No. 14 Campbell evened the season series with a 9-4 win over No. 17 Coastal Carolina in the first ever top-20 matchup in Buies Creek. Ty Cummings turned in a strong performance in his first career start to stifle the nation's No. 3 scoring offense.

The win takes Campbell to 25-6, while Coastal drops to 20-10. The win was Campbell's third over the season over a ranked team, along with a pair of wins over East Carolina.

Cummings was called on to start for the first time after 63 career relief appearances for the Camels. He became just the fourth starter to work five scoreless innings against Coastal this season. The righty stranded two in scoring position in the third and left another runner on third in the fifth by punctuating his day with a called strike three.

Cummings finished with a line of 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, tying the longest outing of his career and setting his longest of 2023.

Campbell's offense gave Cummings some immediate run support with a four-spot in the fourth. The first five Camels reached base with Lawson Harrill providing the big blow, a bases-clearing double to right to put Campbell up 4-0.

Bryce Arnold continued to swing a hot bat and blasted his team-high 13th home run of the year in the second inning. The Camels pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fifth on a pair of RBI singles from Jonah Oster and Drake Pierson.

Coastal cut into the lead with a four-spot of its own in the seventh to get within three, but Campbell had the answer with a runs in both the seventh and eighth to stretch the lead back to five.

Cade Boxrucker helped keep the Chanticleers scoreless over the last two frames, working a pair of 1-2-3 innings and struck out the side in the ninth to end it.

The trio of Cummings, Wiegman, and Cummings did not issue a walk on the night for the first time this season.

Tyler Halstead had a big day at the plate, going 3-4 with a walk and scoring twice. Max Weller scored three times despite going hitless, but did work three walks with an RBI. Belbin, Arnold, and Dalen Thompson all logged two hits on the night.

The Camels and Chanticleers wrap up the season series with a rubber match tomorrow at 4 o'clock. Hunter Loyd is expected to take the hill for Campbell. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
