Campbell powers past GWU 20-16

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Campbell closed the game on a 6-2 run to outlast Gardner-Webb 20-16 on Wednesday afternoon at Spangler Stadium.

The Camels improved to 9-4 overall with their fifth consecutive win, remaining perfect in Big South play (5-0), while GWU dipped to 2-10 on the season and 1-3 in conference matchups. CU also improved to 8-0 all-time against the Runnin' Bulldogs in regular season games.

Tied at 14 with 12:31 to play after three points (two goals and an assist) in 4:15 from Bria Foley, Campbell responded with four straight scores, including a goal and an assist from Joslin Hanbury, putting CU up 18-14 with 4:29 remaining.

Emma Duchscherer's goal with 3:32 on the clock, GWU's first score in nearly nine minutes of game action, broke the Campbell run, but back to back scores from CU's Kyla Azzato and Shania Roehrich sealed the win for the visiting Camels.

Campbell led by as many as five in the second quarter (10-5, 1:39) before Gardner-Webb tied it up three times in the second half. The Camels owned the edge on the draw, 22-17, while matching a season-high with five free position goals.

Rasa Welsh led Campbell with a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists with four draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Sam Bischoff totaled six points on a game-high five goals, her fourth five-plus outing of the season, and an assist with six draw controls.

Azzato collected her second hat trick of the season with three goals to go with an assist, and Hanbury tacked on two goals and an assist for the Camels. Chandler Stewart tallied four ground balls, while Brooke Cressy posted two ground balls with two caused turnovers.

Foley led GWU with nine points on four goals and five assists, with Jada Preston and Duchscherer registering three goals apiece. Heather Lobas also gathered five ground balls with three caused turnovers.

The Camels return to Barker-Lane Stadium for three of its final four regular season dates, including Longwood on Saturday, April 15. Campbell will recognize its 2023 seniors prior to taking on the Lancers.
