BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell split its doubleheader against Gardner-Webb Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
The Camels move to 29-12 overall and remain in first place of the Big South standings with a 10-3 record in conference play. The Runnin' Bulldogs meanwhile move to 16-27 and 5-6 in conference play.
Game One: Campbell 3, Gardner-Webb 1
Campbell picked up a 4-1 win over Gardner-Webb to open the series.
Gardner-Webb struck first in the second inning as Bridgette Strobl knocked a solo home run.
Campbell answered in the bottom half of the second as a bunt from Savannah White brought in Tyra Parker from third while Claudia Ware drove in a pair of runs with a line drive hit to centerfield.
The Camels added insurance in the fifth as Madilyn Gillespie, who went 2-for-2 with a walk on the day, drove in another run.
Isabella Smith (20-7) picked up her 20th win of the season. She tossed 6.2 innings, allowed two hits, one earned run and struck out six batters.
Kalyn Kyle (4-7) took the loss in the circle for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing three earned runs off five hits and walking two in 4.0 innings.
Game Two Gardner-Webb 3, Campbell 2:
Campbell had its late rally fall short in the second game of the doubleheader against Gardner-Webb, falling 3-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning behind two hits that landed just out of reach of a diving Alyssa Henault behind third base. Campbell got one run back in the first as Gillespie recorded a sacrifice fly hit to the second baseman in shallow right center.
The score would remain 2-1 until the 7th inning when Adrienne Visintine recorded an RBI double for Gardner-Webb.
Campbell cut the lead to one as White knocked an RBI double down the left field line before GWU fielded a double play to end the game.
Ware finished 3-for-3 with one run and a walk for the Camels, joining Henault, McDilda and White with hits.
Jaimee Hardy (1-1) took her first loss in the circle for Campbell, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out three.
Andrea Lyon (9-11) earned the win for Gardner-Webb after pitching a complete game with four strikeouts.
Campbell returns Sunday for the rubber match against Gardner-Webb at 1:00 PM.
