No. 11 Camels top UNCW to give Haire wins record

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Head coach Justin Haire earned his 268th career win to become Campbell's all-time wins leader as No. 11 Campbell topped UNCW 6-2 Tuesday night in Wilmington. Haire passed Chip Smith, the head coach from 1996-2006, for sole possession of the all-time wins record.

Haire, a three-time Big South Coach of the Year, is in his ninth year at the helm and 16th total with the program after serving as an assistant under Greg Goff. Haire took over the program in 2015 and has since helped Campbell reach four NCAA Regionals, win four Big South regular season titles, and three Big South tournament titles.

The Camels improve to 28-8 on the year with the win, while UNCW drops to 21-14.

Bryce Arnold opened the scoring with his team-leading 14th home run of the season with a solo shot to left. Campbell threatened for more but left the bases loaded for the first of two times on the night, also doing so in the third.

Hunter Loyd worked most of his outing with the slim 1-0 lead, but that was no problem for the senior. Loyd scattered four hits and three walks but was never in much trouble over the course of his outing.

Loyd finished with a final line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K.

Campbell's bats got going in the final third of the ballgame, starting with a Grant Knipp RBI double in the sixth to double the lead. The Camels finally got some breathing room thanks to a four-run eighth. Chandler Riley and Jarrod Belbin got things going with back-to-back jacks, Riley's first of the season and Belbin's 13th. Drake Pierson capped Campbell's scoring with a two-run double down the right field line to put the Camels up 6-0.

Aaron Rund relieved Loyd to start the seventh and went the rest of the way to earn the three inning save. His only blemish was a two-out, two-run home run in the ninth, which he promptly followed up with a three-pitch strikeout to end it.

Arnold and Logan Jordan head had a pair of hits tonight to pace eight Campbell hits. Despite striking out a season-high 17 times, the Camels stayed busy on the bases with six walks and six HBPs.

The Camels return to Jim Perry Stadium this weekend for a three-game series with High Point. Friday night is Military Appreciation Day along with Friday Night Fireworks. Mama Bird's Ice Cream will be on site Saturday with ice cream in mini helmet cups. Sunday features Family Day and Kids Run the Bases.

All three games of the upcoming weekend will be broadcast on ESPN+.
