Six Camels earn Big South men's tennis honors

Camels open play Friday in Big South Championship

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Six members of Campbell University's Big South regular season co-champion men's tennis teams have earned postseason awards.  Damien Nezar (first team), Benjamin Maes (second), Tomas Balazi (second) and Lukas Steffen (second) were named all-conference in singles, while Nezar (first), Maes (first), Balazi (second) and Leon Petko (second) were chosen in doubles by league head coaches.

Big South athletics communications professionals selected Noe Macquart for the all-academic team.

Nezar was a first-team all-league choice in both singles and doubles for the second-straight season.  A sophomore from Eden, South Africa, he led the team with a 23-9 singles record, including an 11-7 mark at No. 1 singles.  He carries a two-match win streak into the Big South Championship.  Nezar and Maes posted a 14-9 doubles record, including a 13-5 mark in dual matches.  The tandem takes a six-match win streak into the league tournament.

Maes added a second-team all-league singles honor to his second-straight first-team award in doubles.  A junior from Geel, Belgium, Maes has fashioned a 19-5 singles record in '22-23, including a 15-4 dual match mark (4-1 vs. the Big South).  He enters the league championship with eight wins in his last 10 singles matches.

A junior from Trencin, Slovankia, Balazi earned second-team honors in both singles and doubles for a second-consecutive season.  He finished the regular season 15-11 in singles play (4-1 vs. the Big South), including a 9-7 mark at the No. 2 position.  Balazi and fellow Slovakian Petko (Bratislava) finished 10-8 at No. 1 doubles this spring and went 2-3 against Big South competition to earn second-team honors for a second-straight year.  Petko was also 12-7 in singles, including a 9-4 mark in dual matches.

A freshman from Cary, N.C., Steffen was one of only four Big South players to finish a perfect 5-0 in league singles competition this spring.  Twice named Big South freshman of the week, Steffen has compiled a 20-11 overall singles record in his first collegiate season, including a 13-7 record in dual match play.  He enters the Big South Championship with seven wins in his last 10 singles contests.

Not only did Macquart compile a 9-2 singles record and 6-0 doubles mark (with Gustavs Lukstins) this spring, he owns a 3.748 grade-point average as a finance and marketing major.  A two-time Big South All-Academic team member, Macquart helped lead the Camels to back-to-back regular season titles in 2022 (7-0) and 2023 (4-1).

Over the last two seasons, Campbell has compiled a 30-12 overall record and is 11-1 vs. the Big South in dual matches.

Second-seeded Campbell (14-6, 4-1) opens play in the Big South Championship Friday at 2:00 p.m. against third seed Presbyterian (14-9, 4-1) at the Marion Diehl Tennis Center in Charlotte.  The winner will advance to Saturday's 3:00 p.m. title match vs. either top-seeded Gardner-Webb (15-6, 4-1) or fourth seed Radford (9-9, 2-3).
