BUIES CREEK – No. 11 Campbell completed the weekend sweep of High Point with a 14-3 win Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Camels outscored HPU 48-17 during the weekend.
The win takes Campbell to 31-8, 16-2 in the Big South, while HPU falls to 13-27, 6-12 in the league.
Jake Murray turned in a gem in his first career start for the Camels. The lefty worked five shutout innings without allowing a hit and striking out eight. Five innings and eight strikeouts are both good for career highs.
Murray posted a final line of 5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K.
While Murray was rolling on the mound, the offense got going early in this one with a four-run first.
Lawson Harrill provided the big swing in the first with a three-run shot to left, his 13
th of the year and 3
rd of the weekend.
Campbell is now 24-1 when scoring in the first inning this season, and 25-2 when getting on the board first.
Drake Pierson doubled off the wall in the fourth and drove in another run in the fifth to help hang back-to-back three-spots on the scoreboard and go up 11-0 after five.
Chandler Riley kept the offense going with a two-run homer in the sixth, his second of the the week and the season.
Payton Howard was productive at the top of the order, going 3-5 with two runs scored. Pierson continued his hot streak at the plate with two more hits and 3 RBI on the day. Belbin and Riley each scored three times.
Campbell once again benefitted from some free passes, being walked 12 times, one shy of the season high.
The Camels return to action for a pair of midweek games starting with Duke at home on Tuesday ahead of a trip to Elon Wednesday. First pitch against Duke is set for 6 o'clock and will be streamed on ESPN+.
