BUIES CREEK – No. 13 Campbell saw its eight-game win streak snapped in a 4-2 loss to Gardner-Webb in the final home game of the season Sunday afternoon. Campbell collected 10 hits, but left eight on base and grounded into a pair of rally-killing double plays.
The loss drops Campbell to 39-11, 21-3 in the Big South, while Gardner-Webb saw its own nine-game losing streak snapped to move to 28-22, 13-11 in the league.
Gardner-Webb loaded the bases in the top of the first, but settled for just one run. The Runnin' Bulldogs added two more to chase Campbell starter
Cameron O'Brien in the second inning , and added a fourth run with a solo shot off
Ty Cummings in the third to go up 4-0.
The Runnin' Bulldogs did not log another baserunner after the third inning, with
Ty Cummings and Wiley Harley combining to retire the final 19 batters they faced. Cummings worked 4.2 innings allowing three total hits and a run, while Hartley worked the last three innings perfect with a pair of strikeouts.
Campbell's offense began chipping away in the bottom of the third with a sac fly from
Bryce Arnold, and another in the fourth on a
Grant Knipp RBI single to cut the deficit to just two.
The Camels had an opportunity to add more in the seventh, but
Tyler Halstead flew out to left to leave the bases loaded and end the threat.
Chandler Riley's second hit of the day in the ninth brought the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Campbell couldn't do anything with it and fell 4-2.
Riley and
Jarrod Belbin each had two hits on the day to lead the offense.
Campbell returns to action Tuesday at East Carolina. First pitch at Clark-LeClair Stadium is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
