Charlotte edges Camels in NCAA Regional opener 7-2

DURHAM, N.C. – Ella Chancey drove in two and Sam Gress struck out six to lead Charlotte over Campbell 7-2 in Friday's NCAA Durham Regional at Duke Softball Stadium.

Charlotte (34-21) struck for three runs on a pair of first inning hits, including a two-run single from Chancey, after the 49ers loaded the bases with two hit by pitches and a walk.

Campbell (41-17) went in order through the first three innings until a leadoff single from Claudia Ware, followed by a Tyra Parker double kick started a two-run top of the fourth. Madilyn Gillespie put the Camels on the board with a RBI groundout, and Delaney McDilda added another with her two out double down the right field line.

The 49ers answered with a pair of their own in the home half, with two scoring on Ashleigh Washington's two out single, adding runs in the bottom of the sixth on Madelyn Wright's pinch hit double and a Bailey Vannoy sacrifice fly.

Gress (22-12) picked up the win for Charlotte, working six innings with two runs, both earned, on six hits with six strikeouts, while Lena Elkins finishing out a perfect seventh.

Isabella Smith (28-11) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk in one inning. Kayla Howald also worked four innings, surrendering four runs, three earned, on four hits with two walks.

Chancey was 1-for-3 at the plate, while Washington went 1-for-2 with a walk, also scoring a run. Cori Hoffler was also 1-for-2 with a run scored.
