BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Isabella Smith broke the Campbell single-season strikeout record as Campbell earned a pair of shutout wins over Norfolk State Tuesday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Playing in its final home games of the regular season, Campbell (37-13) finish its home slate with a 28-4 record to mark the most wins at home in program history. It also marks the second-highest home win percentage (.875) in a single season, trailing only the 1994 season when CU finished with a 15-2 (.882) home record.
Game One - Campbell 1, Norfolk State 0
Campbell claimed a 1-0 win over Norfolk State in the first game of the doubleheader as Smith became the Campbell single-season strikeout leader.
Tossing a two-hit, eight strikeout gem in the win, Smith surpassed Lauren Caviness' record of 217 strikeouts set in 2007 in the sixth inning.
The Camels scored the eventual winning run in the first as Makayla McClain's squeeze bunt allowed Claudia Ware to score from third.
Norfolk State threatened in the sixth as a single and walk put two runners on. Smith recorded her record-breaking strikeout while Tyra Parker made a catch on the run to end the inning.
Smith (25-8) picked up her 25th win of the season, marking the second-most in program single-season history. The Raleigh, N.C. native stands one win shy of tying the single-season record of 26 wins set by Brittany Stanley in 2008.
Cam Andersen (10-5) took the loss in the circle for the Spartans, allowing five hits and no earned runs in six innings.
Game Two - Campbell 6, Norfolk State 0
Kayla Howald tossed a one-hit shutout as Campbell earned a 6-0 win over Norfolk State in the second game of the doubleheader.
Parker finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run while both Ware and McClain finished 1-for-3 with one RBI each. Delaney McDilda recorded her 100th career hit, finishing 2-for-3 with one run
Campbell put up three runs in the second as both Parker and Allyiah Swiney beat out throws on RBI infield singles. Ware added another run with a RBI double down the left field line.
The Camels added two more runs in the third as Parker recorded her second RBI of the game while McClain drove in another run in the fourth.
.Howald (11-4) tied her season-high with seven strikeouts, walked one and allowed just one hit in a complete game effort.
Alexis Robinson (11-9) tossed four innings for the Spartans, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs with one strikeout.
Campbell heads to Longwood this weekend in a battle of the top teams in the Big South. The Camels seek their third-straight conference regular season crown, needing just one win to claim a share and two wins to earn the title outright.
