Camels fall to NC State in regional opener

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Second-seeded Campbell fell to 3-seed NC State 5-1 in the opening game of the Columbia Regional Friday afternoon. NC State used three solo home runs to power the offense while Campbell struggled to find its rhythm at the plate.

The loss places The Camels in the losers bracket tomorrow at noon where they'll face the loser of tonight's matchup between South Carolina and Central Connecticut State.

Campbell now sits at 44-14 for the year, while NC State moves to 36-19.

LuJames Groover III opened the scoring for the Wolfpack in the first inning, hitting a solo home run over the wall in left-center.

NC State added to their lead with two unearned runs in the third inning off two RBI doubles from Peebles and Nixon.

The Camels got on the board in the sixth inning thanks to a sac fly by Grant Knipp to drive in Max Weller. Campbell was unable to continue the rally, leaving the bases loaded down 3-1.

The Wolfpack extended their lead back to three with Groover's second home run of the day to lead off the seventh inning, and Trevor Candelaria knocked NC State's third home run of the day over the wall in left-center in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Justin Lawson (5-0) got the win for the Wolfpack, pitching the final 3.1 innings. NC State's early offense gave Cade Kuehler (8-1) his first loss of the season. Kuehler finished with a final line of 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

Campbell matched NC State's hit total with each team logging 10, but six of NC State's went for extra bases, while the Camels went without an extra-base hit for just the fourth time all season.

The bottom half of the order accounted for six of Campbell's hits, with Harrill, Riley and Thompson all having two. The Camels were busy on the bases, but struggled to cash in and left 13 on base.

The Camels will play their second game of the regionals on Saturday at noon against the loser of the South Carolina and Central Connecticut State matchup. Broadcast details will be released at a later time.
