Camels open season with road swing at High Point and Old Dominion

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell women's soccer opens the 2023 regular season with two matches on the road as they face rival High Point on Thursday and play the Old Dominion Monarchs on Sunday afternoon.

When: Thursday, August 17 | 7 p.m. 

Where: Vert Stadium | High Point, N.C.

This will be the 21st overall matchup between the Camels and the Panthers. In last year's matchup, Campbell came away with its largest margin of victory in the series, defeating High Point 4-0 at home. Overall, the Fighting Camels hold an 8-10-2 record against the Panthers. 

Scouting the Opponent: High Point finished last season with a record of 5-10-3, 4-4-1. They are led by fellow second-year head coach Aaron McGuiness, who previously spent five seasons as an assistant at VCU. Bri Davis is the top-returning goal scorer, netting five on the season. The Panthers lost Morgan Hairston, who started all 18 games between the pipes. Redshirt sophomore Isabelle Lee is the only current goalkeeper who logged minutes for the Panthers last season.

This is the ninth matchup between Campbell and Old Dominion. The Camels have a 1-5-3 record against the Monarchs, with the last contest in 2014 ending in a 1-1 tie. The Monarchs have a +10-goal differential against Campbell in the nine matches.  

Scouting the Opponent: Old Dominion finished last year 9-9-3 and won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title. Earning the No. 6 seed, they defeated Arkansas State, South Alabama, and James Madison in the tournament. Carla Morich recorded a hat-trick in the championship game and was the team's leading goal-scorer, with eight on the season. Returning is Megan Watts, the team's top playmaker with three assists. Erin Jones led the team with 34 saves between the pipes. The Monarchs are led by head coach Angie Hind in her 10th season. Their 2022 season concluded with a 5-0 loss to North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
