Camels hit the road for matches against William & Mary, College of Charleston

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer returns to the road this week for two pivotal conference matches as they enter the second half of the season.

First, the Fighting Camels (2-4-3, 0-2-2 CAA) travel to Williamsburg, Va., to take on William & Mary (5-0-4, 2-0-1). The Tribe has allowed only three goals so far this season. The Camels will then travel to South Carolina to take on College of Charleston (1-6-1, 1-2-0) on Sunday.

Series History: This is the first-ever matchup between the Campbell Fighting Camels and the Northeastern Huskies. It is one of five first-time opponents among CAA members for the Camels this year (Stony Brook, Drexel, Delaware, Monmouth).

Scouting the Opponent: William & Mary are fourth in the conference with a 2-0-1 record. They have not lost this season, amassing five wins and four draws. Most recently, they are coming off a 0-0 draw against Monmouth on Thursday. Sophomore forward Ivey Crain was selected to the preseason All-CAA team, and she currently leads the Tribe with four goals, nine points, and 20 shots on goal. The Tribe is coached by Julie Shackford in her sixth season at the helm. Shackford has over 30 years of coaching experience. She was named the National Coach of the Year in 2004 after leading Princeton to the NCAA College Cup. She was a three-time All-American during her playing career at William & Mary.

Series History: The two teams have played each other eight times, with the Fighting Camels taking five victories and only one loss. That loss came in the previous matchup, the first game of the 2017 season. Throughout the series, Campbell holds a +25-goal differential (29-4).

Scouting the Opponent: The Cougars enter the week with a 1-6-1 record in the 2023 campaign. Their lone victory was a 11-1 defeat over Hampton to open conference play. They have since had one-goal defeats to Towson (2-1) and UNCW (1-0). While only having one win so far, they still hold a +1-goal differential on the year. Four different players scored two goals against Hampton. Charleston is led by head coach Christian Michner in his 14th season.

Last Time Out: Campbell was unable to stop the high-powered Towson offense, falling 2-1 to the Tigers at home. Nia Christopher secured a brace in the game while becoming Towson's all-time goals leader. Reagan Baiotto scored her first goal of the season for the Camels in the effort.

First Year in CAA: Campbell begins its first season as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association after spending the previous 12 seasons as a member of the Big South. In that time, the Camels amassed 73 conference wins and won the conference tournament in 2020-21.

 

Back-to-back Regular Season Champs: Campbell finished the 2022 regular season unbeaten in conference play with a 7-0-2 record and earned back-to-back conference regular season titles for the first time in program history. It marked the third time in program history the Camels finished the conference regular season slate unbeaten having previously achieved it in the A-Sun conference in 1995 (8-0-2) and 2004 (7-0-3).

In the Record Book: Redshirt senior Amber Liston has moved into 9th place in program history for career shots. She needs to play in seven more matches to move into the top-10 in program history for total matches played.
