Campbell splits Friday doubleheader

Buies Creek, N.C. – Campbell split the Friday doubleheader at the Campbell Invitational with a loss to San Jose State and a win over UTSA. The split takes Campbell's record to 3-6 on the season.

Match One Recap
Campbell jumped out to a quick lead with a 25-22 win in the first set over the Spartans. Chloe Cook was the catalyst early on with five kills in the opening frame en route to a team-high 13 for the match.

SJSU settled in and flipped the score to take the second set 25-22 in favor of the Spartans. The Camels turned in a balanced attack with three players all with three kills in the second, but came up just short. CU trailed by just one at 23-22 before a Spartan kill and ace ended the frame.

After Campbell trailed by as many as seven during the frame, CU battled back to make the third set the closest of the match. CU clawed all the way back to even the score at 24-24 but never overtook SJSU who ultimately took the set 26-24.

Campbell hit a match-low .073 in the fourth and final set that turned out to be the most lopsided of the match. Seven attack errors held Campbell back as SJSU won the fourth set 25-16.

Melody Paige joined Chloe Cook in double figures with 10 kills, while Maddie Converse handed out 31 assists. Claranne Fechter was busy on the back line with a season-high 26 digs in the morning contest.

Match Two Recap
The Fighting Camels took another early lead with a little help with some UTSA miscues. The Camels hit -.028 in the opening frame, but did put down four aces and benefited from four UTSA service errors to claim the opening set 25-22.

UTSA cleaned things up to even the score with a narrow 25-23 set win in the second. The Roadrunners hit .306 while this time it was Campbell struggling to serve with five errors in the second stanza to aid the UTSA cause.

Campbell was solid the rest of the way to take both the third and fourth sets 25-21. The Camels hit .256 in the fourth set, their best mark of the day to close out their third win of the season.

Gwen Wolkow led the way with a career-high 18 kills on .311 hitting. Fechter added to her big day with a new season-high 29 digs in the second match as one of four Camels to reach double figures.

The Camels are back in action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. to take on Georgia Southern in the final match of the Campbell Invitational.
