Campbell welcomes Elon, Towson for first CAA home games

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell hosts Elon and Towson for its first CAA home games. The Camels take on Elon on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7:00 PM and host Towson on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

Campbell's game against Elon will be an Orange Out presented by First Citizens Bank. Fans are encouraged to wear orange while early arriving fans will receive a rally towel. Sunday's game against Towson is Faith and Family Day presented by Papa John's. 

NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE

  • Campbell is the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top-25 in scoring defense in each of the past seven seasons. UConn is the next closest program to accomplish the feat, having done so in six of the past seven seasons
  • Campbell has held 40 opponents to 40 points or less and 99 opponents to 50 points or less in the Ronny Fisher era (since 2016-17)
  • This season Campbell ranks 10th nationally and leads the CAA in scoring defense, limiting foes to 52.3 points per game
  • The Camels lead the country in three-point percentage defense, limiting teams to shoot 21.7 percent from range and rank 16th nationally in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to shoot just 34.5 percent from the floor

LAST TIME OUT

  • Jania Hall made a pair of free throws with 7.8 seconds to lift Monmouth over Campbell 49-47 last Sunday afternoon at the OceanFist Bank Center
  • Kaci Donovan led the Hawks with 11 points while Hall added 10, including eight in the second half alone. Campbell was led by 13 points from Christabel Ezumah and 11 from Shy Tuelle
  • The Camels jumped out to a 13-0 lead to start the game and led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter behind eight points in the period from Tuelle
  • Monmouth cut the deficit to 25-24 at halftime and took its first lead with 3:19 left in the 3Q. The Hawks took their largest lead of the game at 41-38 before Campbell answered with back-to-back threes from Tuelle and Svenia Nurenberg
  • Hall's driving layup tied the game at 47-47 with 57 seconds left and put Monmouth ahead with her free throws with less than eight seconds remaining. Campbell had a good look at tying the game as Gemma Nunez' layup rolled off the iron as time expired

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Located less than two hours away from Buies Creek, Elon enters 4-11 overall and 0-2 in the CAA after falling to Towson and Charleston to open league play
  • Freshman guard Maraja Pass leads the Phoenix averaging 10.3 points per game while junior forward Iycez Adams averages a team-high 6.9 boards along with 9.9 points
  • Towson, one of three CAA regular season co-champions last season, enters 8-4 overall and 1-1 in league play after defeating Elon and falling in overtime at NC A&T
  • The Tigers, who were picked first in the CAA preseason poll, are led by CAA preseason Player of the Year Kylie Korengay-Lucas who leads the team averaging 14.2 points, 8.8 boards and 3.9 assists

SERIES HISTORY

  • Campbell meets Elon for the 30th time in program history and first since 2014
  • Elon has won the last two meetings but Campbell leads the series overall, 18-11. Campbell's last win in the series came in 2012, a 79-69 win in The Creek
  • The Camels meet Towson for the sixth time in program history and first since 1994 when both teams were members of the Big South Conference
  • Campbell is 4-1 all-time against the Tigers

  • Be the 794th/795th win in program history (793-600)

  • Under head coach Ronny Fisher, Campbell has compiled a 96-30 (.774) record at home in Buies Creek including a 46-13 (.813) mark over the past four seasons
  • Over the past seven seasons, Campbell has held foes to 49.4 points per game and outscored its opponents by an average of 12.0 points when playing inside Gore Arena
  • Since the 2016-17 season, the Camels have held foes to 40 points or less 28 times at home
  • Campbell finished non-conference play this season with a 4-0 record

FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS

  • Campbell has opened the season as one of the top shooting teams in the CAA
  • The Fighting Camels lead the CAA and rank 62nd nationally averaging 7.7 threes per game while ranking second in the conference shooting 35.5 percent from range
  • CU also ranks second in the CAA shooting 42.5 percent from the field while its 22.4 bench points lead the conference

BLOCKING MACHINE

  • Christabel Ezumah recorded her 100th block against ETSU on Dec. 17, 2023 and moved into third on the program's all-time block list after recording her 102nd block at Stony Brook
  • Ezumah, who has recorded four or more blocks in four games this season, ranks 42nd nationally and 2nd in the CAA averaging 1.85 blocks per game

SHARPSHOOTING SHY

  • The program leader for three-pointers made, Shy Tuelle has remained as one of the best shooters from behind the arc in the nation
  • Tuelle ranks fifth in the CAA shooting 38.8 from three with 33 threes made on the year
  • The Hampton, Tenn. native is one of 24 active Division-I players to have made 250 or more career three-pointers

EZUMAH EFFICIENCY

  • Ezumah is one of the most efficient forwards in the nation
  • She ranks T-17th amongst active Division-I players shooting 59.0 percent from the field for her career
  • This season, Ezumah is shooting 54.9 percent from the floor
  • Despite playing the fifth-most minutes per game (22.9) on the team, Ezumah leads Campbell averaging a near double-double behind 11.8 points per game and 8.8 rebounds

STAFF PROMOTIONS

  • Head coach Ronny Fisher announced staff promotions for two of his assistant coaches at the beginning of 2024
  • Megan Hall was promoted to Associate Head Coach. The longest tenured member of the Camels' coaching staff, Hall spent 11 seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Wanda Watkins prior to joining Fisher's staff. Hall serves as recruiting coordinator, works on the development of the program's post players and is involved in all aspects of the program
  • Lindsay Bowen was promoted to Assistant Head Coach. Bowen joined Campbell ahead of the 2016-17 season after previously serving as an assistant under Fisher at Presbyterian College for one season. Assisting with all aspects of the program, Bowen works with perimeter players

WANDA WATKINS COURT

  • Campbell dedicated its home court at Gore Arena to legendary student-athlete, coach and administrator Wanda Watkins is who set to retire from Campbell Athletics effective at the end of the 2023-24 academic year.
  • A fixture in the Fighting Camel Athletics program for the last four decades, Watkins currently serves as Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator.  After a 37-year coaching career, she moved into athletics administration at her alma mater in September 2016
  • For 35 seasons, Watkins served as head coach of the Campbell women's basketball team before moving to an administrative position in June of 2016.  While in charge of the Camels on the court, Watkins led her teams to 549 victories, 10 appearances in Division I conference championship games and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher is in his eighth season at the helm of Campbell women's basketball
  • Over the previous seven seasons Campbell has won 135 games for an average of 19 wins per season
  • Before leaving the Big South for the CAA, Fisher was the longest-tenured Big South coach in his 15th season and led all active coaches in the league with 232 wins overall including 146 in Big South play before the 2023-24 season
  • Under Fisher, the Camels claimed the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runners-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with two other postseason appearances in the WBI. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
  • Previously served as head coach at Presbyterian (2008-16)
