Camels open CAA era at Stony Brook and Monmouth

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell women's basketball begins a new era as it travels to face Stony Brook and Monmouth for its first CAA games this weekend. The Camels open conference play at Stony Brook this Friday at 6:30 PM before traveling to face Monmouth on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

All CAA games will be broadcast on FloHoops. Using this specific Campbell link, any Fighting Camels fan can sign up for a FloSports subscription with a discounted rate of $12.99 a month or $99 per year. Faculty, staff, and students with a campbell.edu email address can use the same link for a discounted rate of $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE

  • Campbell is the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top-25 in scoring defense in each of the past seven seasons. UConn is the next closest program to accomplish the feat, having done so in six of the past seven seasons
  • Campbell has held 40 opponents to 40 points or less and 98 opponents to 50 points or less in the Ronny Fisher era (since 2016-17)
  • Through 11 games this season Campbell ranks 6th nationally in scoring defense, limiting foes to 50.7 points per game
  • The Camels lead the country in three-point percentage defense, limiting teams to shoot 20.3 percent from range and rank 10th nationally in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to shoot just 33.3 percent from the floor

STRONG START

  • Campbell is off to a 7-4 start to the season, outscoring foes by a margin of 15.2 points per game

LAST TIME OUT

  • Campbell fell in a tightly contested battle at former Big South rival High Point before the holiday break, 48-47
  • In a game that featured six lead changes and seven ties, Campbell had a chance to win it on the final possession but had its shot blocked as time expired
  • Svenia Nurenberg led the Camels with 10 points and six boards while Christabel Ezumah added nine points. Gemma Nunez recorded eight points, six boards, two assists and two steals
  • CU shot 40.5 percent (17-of-42) from the floor and limited the Panthers to 34.5 percent (19-of-55) shooting from the field and 1-of-21 from three

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Winners of five straight, Stony Brook enters with the best non-conference record in the CAA at 10-1
  • The Seawolves, whose campus is located on the north shore of Long Island, N.Y.,  rank 12th nationally shooting 79.3 percent on free throws, 21st averaging 30.5 defensive rebounds per game, 26th in field goal percentage defense (35.1 percent) and 31st in both scoring margin (+20.0) and three-point percentage defense (25.7)
  • Graduate transfer forward Khari Clark along with fifth-year guard Gigi Gonzalez lead Stony Brook averaging 15.5 points per game
  • Gonzalez also ranks 31st nationally and second in the CAA averaging 5.5 assists per game while Clark ranks 7th nationally and leads the CAA shooting 66.7 percent from the field
  • Stony Brook, who made the WNIT in 2021-22 as members of the American East Conference,  is led by Ashley Langford in her third season at the helm
  • The reigning CAA tournament champions, Monmouth owns a 7-4 record ahead of the CAA opening weekend
  • Senior guard Kaci Donovan leads the Hawks averaging 14.4 points and is shooting 40.3 percent from three
  • Senior center Belle Kranbuhl ranks 18th nationally and leads the CAA averaging 2.36 blocks per game
  • The Hawks, located near the Jersey Shore in West Long Branch, N.J., boast an impressive defense, ranking 44th nationally in scoring defense (55.6), 14th in three point percentage defense (24.0 percent) and 14th in blocks per game (5.7)
  • Monmouth is led by third-year head coach Ginny Boggess

BLOCKING MACHINE

  • Christabel Ezumah recorded her 100th block against ETSU on Dec. 17, 2023 and moved into tie for third on the program's all-time block list after recording her 101st block at High Point
  • Ezumah, who has recorded four or more blocks in four of her past six games, ranks 2nd in the CAA averaging 2.00 blocks per game

SHARPSHOOTING SHY

  • The program leader for three-pointers made, Shy Tuelle has remained as one of the best shooters from behind the arc in the nation
  • Tuelle leads the CAA and ranks 65th nationally shooting 40.8 percent from three
  • She also ranks 47th nationally averaging 2.64 threes per game
  • She is one of 23 active Division-I players to have made 250 or more career three-pointers

EZUMAH EFFICIENCY

  • Ezumah is one of the most efficient forwards in the nation
  • She ranks 9th amongst active Division-I players shooting 60.7 percent from the field for her career
  • This season, Ezumah ranks 19th nationally and 2nd in the CAA shooting 61.1 percent from the field
  • Despite playing the fifth-most minutes per game (22.3) on the team, Ezumah leads Campbell averaging a near double-double behind 11.8 points per game and 9.0 rebounds

STAFF PROMOTIONS

  • To start 2024, head coach Ronny Fisher announced staff promotions for two of his assistant coaches
  • Megan Hall was promoted to Associate Head Coach. The longest tenured member of the Camels' coaching staff, Hall spent 11 seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Wanda Watkins prior to joining Fisher's staff. Hall serves as recruiting coordinator, works on the development of the program's post players and is involved in all aspects of the program
  • Lindsay Bowen was promoted to Assistant Head Coach. Bowen joined Campbell ahead of the 2016-17 season after previously serving as an assistant under Fisher at Presbyterian College for one season. Assisting with all aspects of the program, Bowen works with perimeter players

WANDA WATKINS COURT

  • Campbell dedicated its home court at Gore Arena to legendary student-athlete, coach and administrator Wanda Watkins is who set to retire from Campbell Athletics effective at the end of the 2023-24 academic year.
  • A fixture in the Fighting Camel Athletics program for the last four decades, Watkins currently serves as Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator.  After a 37-year coaching career, she moved into athletics administration at her alma mater in September 2016
  • For 35 seasons, Watkins served as head coach of the Campbell women's basketball team before moving to an administrative position in June of 2016.  While in charge of the Camels on the court, Watkins led her teams to 549 victories, 10 appearances in Division I conference championship games and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher is in his eighth season at the helm of Campbell women's basketball
  • Over the previous seven seasons Campbell has won 135 games for an average of 19 wins per season
  • Before leaving the Big South for the CAA, Fisher was the longest-tenured Big South coach in his 15th season and led all active coaches in the league with 232 wins overall including 146 in Big South play before the 2023-24 season
  • Under Fisher, the Camels claimed the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runners-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with two other postseason appearances in the WBI. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
  • Previously served as head coach at Presbyterian (2008-16)
