Campbell takes on Elon and Charleston in final two regular season matches

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell looks to keep their postseason hopes alive in the final week of the regular season with a trip to Elon on Thursday before Sunday's regular season finale at home against College of Charleston.

The Camels (5-8-3, 3-5 CAA) Need victories in both matches to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Elon (11-2-1, 6-2 CAA) is aiming to maintain their top seeding in the conference tournament, and Charleston (10-3-5, 3-2-4 CAA) is fighting with Campbell for one of the final two spots.

Series History: The Camels and Phoenix have faced off 11 times in the series history, With Campbell coming away with three wins. Last season, the teams played to a 1-1 tie in Buies Creek, and both goals came in the final two minutes.

Scouting the Opponent: After winning only three games last season, the Phoenix are in first place in the CAA with a 11-2-1 (6-2) record. Scoring 26 goals this season while holding opponents to just 12, they are led by Lydia Totten (five goals) and Kennedy Jones (four assists). Rookie Katie Bisgrove has recorded 11 starts in goal, recording 46 saves while only allowing nine goals. Leading the drastic turnaround is head coach Neil Payne in his seventh season.

Series History: This will be the 10th game between these two programs. Campbell holds a 5-2-2 advantage, outscoring the Cougars 29-5. Last season, the Cougars recorded a 1-0 victory.

Scouting the Opponent: The Cougars have a 10-3-5 overall record and three wins in conference play. Their last loss came on September 22 at the hands of Stony Brook. Since that 3-0 defeat, they have three wins and four ties. Faith Slimmer leads the team with eight goals and seven assists, and she's third in the CAA at 1.35 points per game. Savannah Barron has started 16 games between the pipes, and she's holding opponents to a 0.85 goals against average. Christian Michner is in his 15th year as head coach at Charleston. An alum of the school ('98), he recorded his 100th win earlier this season.

Last Time Out: The Camels gave up three first-half goals to Northeastern, as the Huskies won their second conference game of the year to move even with Campbell at 9 points with two matches remaining. Avery Levangie scored twice, and the Huskies outshot the Camels, 17-6.

Weekly CAA Recognition: Here are this week's CAA weekly award winners - Offensive Player of the Week: Millie Davies, Hofstra; Defensive Player of the Week: Riley Melendez, Towson; Rookie of the Week: Malin Bernt Schops, Towson.

Postseason Chances: Four teams have clinched their spot in the CAA Tournament. With two spots remaining, Campbell still has an outside chance at getting in with wins in their final two games and favorable outcomes from Delaware, Towson and Charleston.

Putting herself in the record books: Kaleigh Backlund notched her 22nd career goal in Campbell's victory over William & Mary, a mark that puts her in 10th place in Campbell's career scoring leaders.

Protecting the Pitch: Since the beginning of the 2021 season, the Camels are 22-6-7 in home matches (.629 win percentage).

Rookie Recognition: Midfielder Abby Connolly was named a CAA Rookie of the Week by the conference offices on Sunday for her efforts in Campbell's 2-0 start to conference play. She notched a goal and an assist against UNCW and Hampton.

Defensive Force: Goalkeeper Sierra Vance was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week on August 26. She totaled eight saves in the win over NC State and the draw against ECU. Vance is the first Campbell player to be named conference defensive player of the week since 2022, and the first goalkeeper to win the award since 2019.

Historic Victory: On Thursday, August 22, Campbell defeated NC State for the first time in program history. Goals from Kaleigh Backlund and Alyssa Tucker propelled the Camels to a 2-1 victory that moved the all-time series record to 1-15-2. Backlund's goal in the 13th minute gave Campbell their first lead over the Wolfpack since 2004, and Tucker's conversion from the penalty spot in the 60th proved to be the difference-maker. Campbell's defense held strong, withstanding a 23-6 shot advantage by State, including 13 corner kicks. The win marks the first victory over any of the state's Big 4 schools (NC State, UNC, Duke, Wake Forest).

Returning Talent: Campbell's top point scorer from last season returns in Alyssa Tucker. Kaleigh Backlund also returns after scoring four goals. Defenders Meghan Bernetti and Riley Terrill bring consistency to the back line. The two led the Camels in total minutes for the 2023 campaign.

 

Newcomers in the Creek: Campbell welcomes 13 newcomers for the 2024 season. The group includes three transfers and 10 incoming freshmen.

Freshman Accolades: Plenty of freshman made their marks at the high school level during their senior seasons. Ava Kanaar led the entire country during the 2023-24 winter season with 70 goals, totaling 183 over her high school career. Gillian Garrison scored 67 goals as a senior, ninth most in the country for the spring 2024 season. Abby Connolly racked up 78 goals during the spring 2024 season, second most in the country. Tyler Baughan set a school record with 43 goals in her senior season and was named all-state for her junior and senior years. Caitlyn Boucher completed a 17-0 3A state championship season in Maryland as a team captain.
