NEWARK, Del. – Campbell women's soccer fought hard against red-hot Delaware, but ultimately fell in the closing minutes, 1-0, Thursday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware's (6-4-2, 4-0 CAA) Brooke Vogel scored the winning goal with just 92 seconds left in the match to give the Blue Hens their fifth consecutive victory and place them all alone at the top of the CAA standings.
Campbell (4-5-3, 2-2) has allowed three second half goals in their past two games to fall to .500 in conference play.
Both teams created multiple chances in the first half, but neither could find the back of the net. Sierra Vance had two saves in the opening frame, and the Camels recorded six shots with one on goal.
The first 20 minutes of the second half went much the same way, as the Camels had two shots and the Blue Hens three. Campbell's defensive line stayed strong, blocking multiple shots from inside the box and preventing Vance from needing to make a save.
Campbell created a strong chance on goal in the 65th minute, as Adele Schwab received a cross at the top of the box and sent it towards goal. The on-target shot did not have enough pace, however, and Delaware goalkeeper Kyla Burns dove to her right to make the save.
The Camels created another strong chance in the 80th minute. Kendall Lincoln dribbled past her defender on the left side and sent a low cross across the face of goal. Two Camels, one at each post, had an opportunity to get on the end of the ball, but neither were able to play it into the back of the net.
Delaware's goal opportunity was created by Vogel, who earned a foul just outside the box on the left side. Gabby Riley took the free kick short towards the top of the box, passing it to Caitlin St. Leger, who fired a shot towards goal from outside the box. The shot deflected off the hip of Vogel, which sent it away from Vance and into the right side of the goal.
Both teams ended with three shots on goal and five offsides, but Campbell committed 10 fouls to Delaware's one. The Blue Hens also held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Jeff Gross
"Quite a good performance with a disappointing conclusion. We had moments to win this, and a tie would have been a good point on the road. But, players have to understand that fine line and deliver when it matters. We did not do that tonight."
