ELON, N.C. – Rushawn Baker and Chandler Brayboy combined for five touchdowns, leading Elon over visiting Campbell 50-27 on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium.
Elon improved to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in CAA games, while Campbell fell to 3-6 on the year and 1-4 against conference opponents.
Baker ran for 154 yards on 23 carries, finding the end zone three times, while Brayboy totaled 309 all-purpose yards, including 183 yards receiving with two TDs. Brayboy added 113 yards in kickoff returns and a rush for 13 yards in the win for the Phoenix.
Matthew Downing completed 16-of-24 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, piloting the Elon offense to 464 total yards.
Caleb Curtain led Elon's defense with 12 tackles and a pass breakup, with Cazeem Moore tacking on a sack.
Randall King and
Sincere Brown combined for 280 yards and four touchdowns receiving, the most combined receiving yards for a Campbell duo in history. King hauled in seven catches for 145 yards and two TDs, all season-bests for the freshman wide receiver, while Brown tallied seven grabs for 135 yards and two more scores. The game was Brown's fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season, and second straight.
In his first start as a Camel,
Mike Chandler II completed 22-of-39 passes for 355 yards and four touchdowns, also rushing for a team-high 51 yards on 10 carries.
Jalen Brooks paced Campbell's defense with nine tackles, including 1.5 stops for loss and a sack, while
Jojo Pace posted seven tackles.
Elon jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead before Campbell answered with a 42-yard touchdown reception from
Randall King, the first score of the freshman's career. The ensuring point after was blocked and returned for a two point conversion, giving the Phoenix a 16-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Campbell cut the Elon lead to 16-13 with
Sincere Brown's 70-yard TD catch from
Mike Chandler III, Brown's third touchdown of 50 or more yards in his last two games. The Phoenix, however, wrapped a 27-0 run around the halftime break, extending their lead to 43-13 before King and Brown added touchdowns for Campbell.
