Camels fall to Elon 2-1

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Elon scored goals in each half to defeat Campbell 2-1 Saturday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

Campbell falls to 8-6-4 overall and finishes 7th in the CAA standings with a 3-4-1 record, narrowly missing out on a conference tournament berth. Elon (10-6-1, 6-2-0) claimed the CAA regular season title with the win.

The Phoenix struck first in the 41st minute as Scott Vatne's free kick from just outside the penalty arc hit the bar down and in. Elon added another goal in the 67th minute from Connor Mucchetti.

The Camels were awarded an indirect free kick just inside the box in the 78th minute after Elon's keeper Tomas Wroblewski took longer than six seconds to release the ball from his hands. Luc Lavielle tapped the ball for Curtis DeLeon who curled it around the wall and in on the far side.

Campbell fired three more shots off across the final 22 minutes but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Camels held a 12-4 advantage in shots, including 10-2 in the second half, while both sides put three shots on goal. The Phoenix took seven corners to just five for Campbell.

"It was a great battle and effort out of them tonight," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder on his team's effort tonight. "Can't second guess anything that they did- they played their hearts out. Unfortunate that we didn't get a result tonight, but credit to Elon."

Seniors Tai-Reece Chisholm, Curtis DeLeon, Owen Mikoy, Daniel Osei-Tutu and Carson Pina were honored in a pre-match ceremony. The group combined for 46 wins, two Big South regular season titles, one Big South tournament title and a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2021.

"This program has seen so much success; championships, trophies, et cetera," Fonder continued. "But our mantra is family and we lost that last year. These seniors restored the culture and their restoration will set us up for future success."
