#19 Richmond edges Campbell 14-11 in season opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Colleen Quinn and Alexis Morton each posted five points as #19 Richmond defeated Campbell 14-11 to open the 2024 season Saturday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Quinn led the way for all scorers with four goals while adding one assist. Morton finished with two goals and a game-high three assists while Ali Susskind added three goals off the bench. Clare McCooe led all players with 10 draw controls.

Richmond, ranked #19 in the ILWomen/IWLCA national preseason poll, jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 6-1 midway through the second period. Campbell responded with back-to-back free position goals from Ally Heath and Sam Bischoff. Bischoff cut the deficit to 6-4 with her second goal of the half before the Spiders scored twice in an 11-second span to take a four-goal lead into halftime.

The Spiders took their largest lead of the day of 10-4 right out of the break with goals from Morton and Juliana Stanley to open the third period. Campbell answered as Bischoff tallied her 28th career hat trick and Joslin Hanbury recorded consecutive free position goals. Richmond pulled away for good as Quinn scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Rebekah Taylor led all players with four ground balls with two caused turnovers. Chandler Stewart added two ground balls and a team-best three caused turnovers while Hailey Kohlmann added two ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control.

Richmond controlled the draw 19-7, out-shot the Camels 33-18 and held a 21-18 advantage on ground balls. Campbell finished 6-of-7 on free position goals with Hanbury scoring on all three of her attempts.

The Camels hit the road for their next two games, facing off at former Big South rivals High Point next Saturday, Feb. 17 and at Radford on Friday, Feb. 23.
