BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Fighting Camels used a mix of big hits and strong plate discipline to earn the 5-4 win over #17 UCSB Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Lawson Harrill began the game with a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the first. He followed that up with a two-run shot in the third, scoring Dalen Thompson. The blasts were Harrill's first of the year after launching 22 in 2023, totaling over 850 feet.
The Gauchos responded with a two-run homer of their own in the sixth off the bat of Zander Darby.
Besides the one blemish, Zach Sabers pitched six clean innings for the Camels, recorded two strikeouts, two walks and eight groundouts.
Santa Barbara took the lead in the seventh inning when Trey McCollum laced a double down the right field line, scoring two. It was the first lead of the day for the Gauchos, who led wire-to-wire last night.
In the eighth inning, the Camels took back the lead for good with smart plate discipline. The first four batters in the inning all earned walks – Max Weller, Chandler Riley, Andrew Schuldt and Trenton Harris.
After Harris's walk tied the game at four, Thompson hit an infield groundout that scored Riley from third.
Jackson Roberts pitched one inning in relief, and Jeremy Wiegman came on for the final two innings. In the eighth, Wiegman went three up three down with two ground outs and a strikeout.
The ninth inning had its excitement. After securing the first out, Wiegman allowed a single before recording his second strikeout on the night. He then walked the next two batters, before striking out Ivan Brethowr with the bases loaded to end the game. Wiegman secured the win with three strikeouts and allowing only one hit.
Hudson Barrett was given the loss for the Gauchos.
