CONWAY, S.C. - Mandy Lauth's two out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning lifted George Washington over Campbell, 4-3, in the 2024 season opener for both teams Friday at the Kickin' Chicken Classic.
The Campbell starting lineup featured three new faces, including two transfers and freshmen Hannah Leierer starting in the circle.
Campbell (0-1) held a 3-2 lead until GW's (1-1) Paige Hayward's seventh inning RBI double knotted the score at 3-3, sending the game to extra innings.
Cece Smith (1-0) pitched all eight innings for GW, allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits with a strikeout and four walks.
Isabella Smith (0-1) was charged with the loss, surrendering an unearned eighth inning run on one hit, with two strikeouts and a walk in 1.2 frames. Campbell starter
Hannah Leierer worked five innings, scattering two runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk.
The Camels scored in the first inning on an RBI single from Stacey Deputy. In the bottom of the second inning, Alyssa Henault put the Camels in the lead by also hitting an RBI single that brought in Allyiah Swiney and Kayla Thomas.
