Campbell falls to Georgia Southern in series opener

STATESBORO, Ga. – Campbell baseball scored four in the fifth inning but ending up falling 9-4 to Georgia Southern Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.

The game begin two and a half hours after the original start time because of rain in the area.

The Camels were unable to take advantage of early baserunners, leaving five on base in the first two innings.

Georgia Southern scored one in the second inning, as JD Kaiser beat the throw to first on what would have been an inning-ending double play. Jonathan Jaime scored from third on the play.

The Eagles would follow that with three in the third. Camel starting pitcher Derek Vartanian was forced to leave the game after giving up a single in the inning with an apparent elbow injury. GS would then walk in two runs and hit a sacrifice fly.

Georgia Southern added two more in the fourth with two RBI singles to bring their total to six.

Campbell would eventually put themselves on the scoreboard in the fifth. Lawson Harrill started it off with a first-pitch double down the left field line. Reed Stallman would then double down the right field line to score Harrill.

Chandler Riley would then reach first after strike three went past the catcher. Stallman was able to score from second on the play. The out would have been the third out of the inning. Joe Simpson added two with an RBI single through the middle, scoring Riley and Grant Knipp.

The Eagles added another two runs in the bottom of the fifth by way of a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice.

Georgia Southern scored for the fifth consecutive inning, scoring one in the sixth on a wild pitch.

The Camels were unable to string hits together in the final three innings, as the final tally remained 9-4.

The series between the Camels and the Eagles continues tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Zach Sabers (1-0) and Mitchell Gross (0-1) are the projected starters.
