Campbell defeats Lafayette, improves to 12-4

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell baseball won their fourth game in a row Tuesday evening, defeating Lafayette 11-5 at Jim Perry Stadium.

The No. 21 ranked Fighting Camels improved to 12-4, while the Leopards sit at 1-13.

Lafayette was first on the board with a solo home run in the second inning off the bat of Michael Zarrillo.

The Leopard lead was short-lived, as Lawson Harrill put the Camels in front in the third with a two-run home to score Payton Howard.

A second two-run homer in the fourth put the Camels up, 4-1. This one was from Grant Knipp, who is second in the country with 12 on the season.

Junior Cole Peschl got the start for the Camels and pitched 6+ innings. He faced 24 batters and allowed only 3 hits with a season-high ten strikeouts and only one walk.

Peschl faced four batters in the top of the seventh and allowed one run before Jackson Roberts came on in relief with the bases loaded. Three more runs would come across before Roberts recorded three outs, and Lafayette would lead again, 5-4.

The Camels took back the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Knipp worked a walk, and Howard advanced him to second. Harrill was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out.

After a strikeout put two outs on the board, Dylan Koontz hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped. Knipp and Harrill both came around to score on the play to put Campbell up, 6-5.

In the top of the eighth, Roberts allowed a walk, but forced the next batter to ground into a double play. He then struck out the final batter of the inning before the Camels came back to the plate.

The Camels pounced in the bottom of the eighth. Charlie Meglio led off with a homer to left that was 109 mph off the bat and traveled 440 feet.

Later in the inning, Dalen Thompson hit a double off the top of the wall in left center to score Harrill and Howard. Koontz followed that up with a single into center field to bring Thompson home.

Roberts locked it down in the ninth, striking out the first two batters. He finished with four strikeouts in the winning effort. The final out of the day was a diving grab by Howard in center field going back towards the wall.
