ELON, N.C. – The Campbell Camels bounced back from their two-game skid in a big way, defeating Elon 13-1 Friday evening at Latham Park.
The Fighting Camels (18-7, 2-2 CAA) started hot in the first inning. Peyton Bonds laced the first pitch of the game down the left field line for a double. He and Payton Howard came around to score on an RBI single from Reed Stallman.
Lawson Harrill stole third, then scored on a throwing error by the Elon pitcher as he attempted to pick off Stallman at first.
The Phoenix (10-15, 0-4) scored their only run in the second inning with an RBI single from James Broderick.
Starting pitcher Zach Sabers was strong on the mound for Campbell. He went six innings, allowing only one run on just five hits and three strikeouts. After the win, Sabers sits at 4-0 on the year.
Bonds doubled Campbell's score with a three-run homer to left in the fourth. It was Bonds' first homer of his collegiate career, as he scored Chandler Riley and Andrew Schuldt.
After Stallman doubled in the fifth inning, Schuldt and Charlie Meglio hit back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead once again.
The Camels recorded seven hits and six earned runs off Elon's All-CAA starter Justin Mitrovich, who entered the game with a 2.65 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
Campbell scored their final five runs in the seventh. Dalen Thompson began the inning with a solo home run to left center, his sixth of the year. The next four runs of the inning were all unearned, as the Camels took advantage of multiple miscues from Elon.
Riley reached on a fielding error by the second baseman with the bases loaded, and Stallman scored on the play. Bonds then hit a sac fly to score Schuldt, his fourth RBI of the day.
Harrill hit a pop-up to right field, where the defender dropped it, allowing Riley and Meglio to score.
Garret Kangas, Ethan Snyder, and Will Palmer combined to pitch the final three innings. Each of them allowed only one hit, and Kangas threw one strikeout and Palmer threw two.
