WASHINGTON – Ninth-seeded Campbell's season ended Saturday afternoon in a 90-67 loss to eight-seed Monmouth in the second round of the CAA Championships. The Camels finish their inaugural CAA season with a final mark of 14-18, 8-10 in league play.
Anthony Dell'Orso led the way with 23 points, while
Jasin Sinani added 21. Dell'Orso wraps up his sophomore season with 624 total points on the year, the sixth-most in a single season in program history.
Monmouth featured a balanced scoring effort with six players finishing in double figures, led by 15 from Nikita Konstantinovskyi. The Hawks finished the day shooting 55% as a team.
Campbell came out hot hitting three early triples and took a quick nine-point lead at 17-8. From then on Monmouth settled in and fought back to even the score at 23-23 after 12 minutes of action. The Hawks offense got even hotter to finish the first half and built a 15-point halftime lead over the final eight minutes of the half to go to the locker rooms ahead 46-31.
Campbell connected on only eight first-half field goals, but was steady at the stripe going 11-13 to go along with four made triples.
The Hawks pushed the lead to as many as 25 during the second half with Campbell never able to cut much into the deficit. The Hawks shot 59% in the second half led by Xander Rice, Monmouth's leading scorer on the season, with 10 points and four assists after being held to only two points in the first. Dell'Orso scored 14 of his 23 points after halftime to try and keep Campbell in the ballgame.
CU surrendered 14 offensive rebounds leading 18 second-chance points. The Hawks also controlled the paint with 50 points inside to just 20 for Campbell on the afternoon.
