The best in Campbell Athletics honored at 2024 Cammys

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Brittany Staves from the women's basketball team and Mahlon Dyer from football took top honors as Miss and Mr. Campbell Thursday night at the 2024 Cammys, showcasing the best in Campbell University Athletics over the last calendar year, held at the Oscar Harris Student Union.

Other headline honors included swimmer Angelica Ragazzoni, a CAA medalist and recordholder, as CU's Outstanding Female Athlete, as well as 2024 All-American Taye Ghadiali from wrestling as this year's Outstanding Male Athlete.

The award was the final of three on the night for Ghadiali, who also collected Play of the Year honors for his theatrical pin in a home win over Appalachian State, and shared Male Individual Performance of the Year with baseball's Grant Knipp.

Chastity Pickett also picked up Female Individual Performance of the Year after an All-American campaign on the track.

Legendary women's basketball coach and administrator Wanda Watkins, who will retire in 2024 after nearly five decades of service to Campbell, also received the Bob Roller Excellence Award. Watkins, the namesake of the playing service inside Gore Arena, began her Campbell career as the school's first female scholarship athlete, serving as head women's basketball coach from 1981-2016, amassing 549 wins before stepping in as Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator.

Outstanding Male Team of the Year went to Baseball for its historical championship 2023 season, while Outstanding Female Team of the Year was shared by Volleyball, which flourished in its first CAA season, and Track & Field, who's 2023 campaign ended as Big South Conference runner-up and multiple All-American accolades.

Women's Golf earned Female Team Performance of the Year for its 2023 Big South title run, followed by Men's Basketball taking home Male Team Performance honors for its double overtime, nationally-televised win over UNCW.

Collecting Newcomer of the Year accolades were Alyssa Tucker from Women's Soccer, and Football's VJ Wilkins.

Additionally, Swimming was honored the Highest Team GPA award, and Women's Soccer collected the inaugural Camel Cup. The Iron Camel Awards, meanwhile, went to Olivia Neal from women's soccer, and Monchovia Gaffney from football.

Campbell student-athletes, coaches, staff, and special guests gathered Thursday in the Oscar Harris Student Union's Keith Family Ballroom for an awards show to celebrate the accomplishments of the last 12 months.  The event was hosted by Chris Hemeyer and Lendl Suggs.

See below for the full list of honorees.

Established in 2011 under the guidance of former Athletics Director Bob Roller, the Cammys is led by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which consists of student-athletes from CU's 21 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics programs.
