Campbell defeats NC A&T in walk-off fashion

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Fighting Camels defeated the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 7-5, thanks to a walk-off home run by Dalen Thompson in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

This was the first game of the season for Campbell (22-9, 5-4 CAA) to go into extra innings. It's the third walk-off win for Campbell, who previously defeated Ohio and Valparaiso in like manner. The victory also clinched the series for Campbell against the Aggies, taking the final two games.

Campbell jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings. Lawson Harrill started it off with a solo home run in the first inning. He now has 14 home runs on the year, just one behind team-leader Grant Knipp.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy singled up the middle in the second to score Charlie Meglio. O'Shaughnessy recorded his second RBI in the fourth inning, driving in Reed Stallman with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Chandler Riley scored two with another RBI single to right field.

Nate Brittain started the game on the mound for the Camels for his first collegiate start. He had a strong outing, going five innings and recording six strikeouts while allowing just one hit and two walks.

The Aggies (18-13, 3-6) scored four runs in the sixth on just one hit in the frame. Two runs were walked in by Campbell pitchers, while the other two scored on an RBI single from Devon Rodriguez.

Campbell's pitching responded in the seventh. Packy Bradley-Cooney struck out two in the frame and forced one fly out. Bradley-Cooney came back out for the eighth inning, where TJ Ash reached on a fielding error. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a sac fly from Enrique Wood to tie the game at 5-5.

The Camels did not have any baserunners in the eighth or ninth innings, but the Aggies had zero in the ninth and 10th innings thanks to Jackson Roberts. In the two innings of work, Roberts recorded five strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season.

Harrill went to first on an eight-pitch walk off Angel Ortiz (2-2) to begin the 10th frame. After fouling the ball off twice on bunt attempts, Thompson sent the 3-2 pitch 393 feet over the wall in left center for Campbell's second walk-off home run of the season.
