LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty scored nine runs in the first four innings as Campbell fell, 14-9, Wednesday night at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
The Camels (27-16) scored in the top of the first with a two-out solo home run by Lawson Harrill, his 20th of the season. The next two batters reached, then Andrew Schuldt hit an RBI single for the second run of the inning.
The Flames (19-25) scored five runs in the bottom of the frame, all with two outs. A hit-by-pitch and two walks loaded the bases. Another bases-loaded walk scored their first run, then John Simmons hit a bases-clearing double. An RBI single followed for the final run of the inning.
David Rossow got the start in his first action of the past two seasons, as he worked back from an elbow injury. Simon Bargo was the first pitcher out of the bullpen, and Lynchburg native Will Palmer replaced Bargo in the fourth inning.
Liberty scored one in the bottom of the second before Harrill connected on his second homer of the day in the third that hit off the batter's eye in center field. The knock was the 49th of his career, putting him one behind the program record set by John Posey (1984-86).
Liberty extended their lead back to four with one run in the bottom of the third as Simmons recorded his fourth RBI on the day with a solo home run to right center.
The Camels added one more in the fifth inning. Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a ground ball to the shortstop with two outs and runners on the corners. The defender could not field it cleanly, and Schuldt scored on the play.
Palmer held Liberty to their first scoreless inning in the bottom of the fifth. They would then go on to score once in the sixth on an RBI single from Noah Rabon.
After Palmer, Ethan Snyder, Kamau Freeman and Drew Siegner saw action out of the bullpen for the Camels.
The Flames continued their hot offensive night with three runs in the seventh. Macaddin Dye laced a two-RBI double down the left field line. He would then advance to third and come around to score on two wild pitches later in the inning.
In his first game back since returning from an injury, Payton Howard hit a two-run homer to center field in the eighth inning to make the score 13-6. Schuldt followed that with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
Liberty added their final run in the eighth inning with an RBI single from Brayden Horton that went just past the diving attempt from Reed Stallman at first base.
Harrill added another run for the Camels in the ninth, knocking a ground rule double to left, scoring Dalen Thompson who had come on as a pinch hitter.
