BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Campbell Fighting Camels were unable to get much going in their season opener against the Virginia Tech Hokies, falling 4-0 Thursday evening at Thompson Field.
The Hokies controlled the pace of play through the first 10 minutes of the match, recording five shots to Campbell's zero. Virginia Tech also had two corner kicks in that time frame, but Campbell's defense held strong, allowing zero shots on goal in the early going.
Virginia Tech threatened in the 14th minute, as Taylor Price received a through ball and dribbled around Sierra Vance in goal. Price put a shot on goal, but Caitlyn Boucher came over and cleared the ball off the line to keep the match scoreless.
The Hokies broke through with the first goal of the match in the 25th minute of the first half. Anna Weir received a long through ball in transition, and she was able to chip Vance in goal before slotting it in past the left post.
Tech added one more goal just before halftime in the 43rd minute. Kylie Marschall found herself at the end of a corner kick from Kendall DiMillio, and she guided it into the net to double their advantage.
AnaÑ—s van Doesburg made three saves for the Camels in the second half as she played the final 45 minutes.
The Hokies continued their pressure into the second half, as Natalie Mitchell scored on a free kick just outside the box, placing the ball into the bottom left corner in the 56th minute.
Virginia Tech held a significant advantage in shots, 22-2, and corner kicks, 17-1.
Ava Kanaar recorded Campbell's first shot on goal in the 74th minute, but it was saved by Mikki Easter.
Ava Arengo added one last goal for the Hokies in the 90th minute to make the final score 4-0.
