Camels host NC State, travel to East Carolina for in-state matchups

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After facing off against two Virginia schools last week, the Campbell women's soccer team takes on two in-state schools this week with a visit from NC State and a road game against East Carolina.

The Camels (0-1-1) are looking for their first victory of the season along with NC State (0-1-1), while the Pirates (1-0) face off against UNC Greensboro on Thursday in search of their second consecutive win.

Series History: The Camels and Wolfpack are meeting for the 18th time in series history. NC State has won 15 of the previous matchups. The teams have tied twice, most recently in 2021, 1-1 in double overtime. NC State's 11-0 victory in 1992 (Campbell's first year of competition) is the largest margin of defeat in program history.

Scouting the Opponent: The Wolfpack start the year with an identical 0-1-1 record to Campbell after the first week of action. They started with two home games, a 0-0 tie to App State and a 1-0 loss to East Carolina. NC State is still looking for its opening goal of the 2024 campaign, totaling seven shots on goal through the first two matches. Freshman forward Antonella Mazziotto leads the charge with four shots, and fellow freshman Janet Okeke has recorded two shots on goal so far. Olivia Pratapas has seen all the time in goal so far, notching three saves. Tim Santoro is in his 12th year leading the Wolfpack, who were picked to finish 12th (out of 17) in the Preseason ACC Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Camels and Pirates have faced off 19 times, a tie for fifth-most in program history. Campbell has five wins all time against ECU. Last season, the Pirates came away with a 1-0 victory.

Scouting the Opponent: ECU has a 1-0 record to start the year, defeating NC State 1-0 on the road. Defender Abby Sowa scored the goal, and she was subsequently named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The Pirates finished the 2023 season with a 9-5-5 record and a first-round exit in the AAC Championship after finishing fourth in the conference. This year, the Pirates were picked to finish third in the preseason coaches' poll, the highest preseason poll placement in program history. Annabelle Abbott, Maeve English and Samantha Moxie were named to the conference's preseason watch list. Gary Higgins leads the Pirates in his third season as head coach.

Last Time Out: Campbell came away with a 3-3 tie against George Mason in the home opener on Sunday. Freshmen Tyler Baughan and Abby Connolly opened their college ledgers with a goal each, and Connolly added an assist. Kaleigh Backlund finished a set piece with a goal in the final minute to secure the draw. Alyssa Tucker also had a strong outing, recording two assists in the match.

Newcomers in the Creek: Campbell welcomes 13 newcomers for the 2024 season. The group includes three transfers and 10 incoming freshmen.

Returning Talent: Campbell's top point scorer from last season returns in Alyssa Tucker. Kaleigh Backlund also returns after scoring four goals. Defenders Meghan Bernetti and Riley Terrill bring consistency to the back line. The two led the Camels in total minutes for the 2023 campaign.

Freshman Accolades: Plenty of freshman made their marks at the high school level during their senior seasons. Ava Kanaar led the entire country during the 2023-24 winter season with 70 goals, totaling 183 over her high school career. Gillian Garrison scored 67 goals as a senior, ninth most in the country for the spring 2024 season. Abby Connolly racked up 78 goals during the spring 2024 season, second most in the country. Tyler Baughan set a school record with 43 goals in her senior season and was named all-state for her junior and senior years. Caitlyn Boucher completed a 17-0 3A state championship season in Maryland as a team captain.
