Boone's double-double leads Campbell past UNCW 68-55

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Gianni Boone recorded her first career double-double with 20 points and 10 boards to lead Campbell past UNCW 68-55 Friday night at Gore Arena.

Campbell (9-7, 2-2) picks up its second-straight CAA win and remains undefeated at home (7-0) while UNCW (8-9, 2-2) falls for a second time in its last three outings.

Boone scored 15 of her 20 points for the Camels in a first half that featured four ties and four lead changes. Campbell never trailed after Boone knocked down a three with 5:28 left in the first quarter.

Kate Hollifield's three with 3:00 to go until halftime made it a one point game before the Camels  scored the final six points of the half behind a second-chance layup by Ciara Alexander and four points from Hadleigh Dill.

The Camels extended its lead in the third quarter to as many as 20, holding the Seahawks to just 3-of-16 shooting in the period. Campbell earned its largest lead of the night at 21 after Gemma Nunez was fouled on a layup and knocked down the ensuing free throw.

Boone notched her third 20-point game of her career with a free throw in the fourth quarter. She led all scorers and rebounders despite playing just under 25 minutes.

Jasmine Felton added 11 points for the Camels, Dill scored 10 points and Alexander finished in double-figures for a seventh-straight game with 11 points and nine rebounds. Nunez scored seven points and added six assists.

Ali Zelaya and Jania Hall each led the Seahawks with 15 points each while Hollifield finished with 12 points off 4-of-6 shooting from three. UNCW leading scorer Taylor Henderson finished with just two points on 1-of-11 shooting.

Campbell shot 50.0 percent (31-of-62) overall and knocked down 5-of-7 free throws while the Seahawks shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the field, 30 percent (6-of-20) from three and converted 7-of-10 free throws.

CU held a 41-34 edge on the boards and outscored the Seahawks 54-30 in the paint.

Campbell returns to action on Sunday in a 2 PM tip against Delaware at Gore Arena.
