WILMINGTON, NC –
Gwen Wolkow turned in a big night to power Campbell to a five-set win over UNCW Friday night. Campbell is now 3-0 in five-set matches this season.
The win ends a two-game slide for the Camels as they improve to 11-5, 3-2 on the year.
Wolkow logged a career-high 24 kills along with a career-best five aces. She made it a double-double for good measure with 10 digs added to her line. Her .404 hitting percentage is a career-best in matches with at least 30 attacks.
It was a strong partnership between Wolkow and her setter
Hannah Pattie, who came away with a career-best 38 assists on the night.
Campbell dropped the first set 25-21. UNCW featured a balanced attack early with four players logging three kills each and hit .406 in the first frame to take an early 1-0 advantage.
The Camels controlled the second set from start to finish to win it 25-12 and even the score. After hitting .406 in the first, UNCW collected only five kills and hit just .036 in the second frame while Campbell hit .333.
Campbell's success at the service line guided the Camels to a 25-17 third set win. The Camels came up with seven aces in the set in addition to hitting .407 to take the third and go up 2-1 in the match.
UNCW's offense came to life again in the fourth set to give the Seahawks a 25-20 set win to force a deciding frame.
Campbell turned the heat up again in the fifth with 12 kills on .571 hitting to race past UNCW 15-6 in the final frame. While the Camels seemingly couldn't miss in the fifth, the Seahawks had only two kills in the fifth.
In addition to Wolkow, Daca tallied 12 kills while Tuyo joined them in double figures with 10.
Hailey Heytvelt stood tall on defense with seven blocks, while
Bella Illig anchored the back row with 25 digs.
The Camels will look to complete the weekend sweep of the Seahawks tomorrow at 2pm. That one will again be available on FloCollege.
