JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Alonya Waldon banked in a half-court heave with 0.3 seconds left to lift North Florida over Campbell, 56-53, Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena in the final game of the Osprey Thanksgiving Classic.
Â
Waldon finished with 17 points to lead the Ospreys (3-4) over the Camels (4-5), who were led by
Jasmine Felton's 18 points and a career-high four blocks.
Â
Each team struggled early to find its rhythm, resulting in a 14-6 first quarter lead for UNF. The Camels did not score in the final 4:30 of the first quarter, and the Ospreys struggled similarly in the second half of the first frame.
Â
After Dezuray McGill hit a three-pointer with 5:06 on the clock, the Ospreys next scored on a buzzer-beating three pointer from Alexa Washington to create a 14-6 advantage.
Â
Campbell's offense picked up in the second quarter, scoring 21 points and tying the game at 27 when
Ashleigh Battle made three free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining before halftime. Battle finished the game with a season-high 25 minutes of play.
Â
The Ospreys made six three-pointers in the first half and out-rebounded the Camels 24-9, but a 10-4 scoring run by CU over the last five minutes put the teams even at halftime.
Jasmine Felton led CU with nine first-quarter points and three rebounds, and
Ciara Alexander contributed six points.
Â
Felton knocked down her second three pointer with 1:27 left in the third quarter to give the Camels their first lead of the game, 36-35. One reason the Camels were able to keep it close through their offensive struggles was that they forced 17 UNF turnovers through the first three quarters.
Â
After a back-and-forth start to the fourth quarter, Alexander scored six straight to put the Camels up five with just over four minutes to play.
Â
With two minutes left and the Camels up three with the ball, CU pulled down two offensive rebounds on the same possession but was unable to score points. Jamisyn Stinson hit a three for UNF on the ensuing possession to tie the game.
Â
The Ospreys forced a turnover on a following CU possession and was fouled on the fastbreak opportunity and converted one free throw to go up two.
Â
After a CU timeout, Felton drove toward the basket to force contact and the foul. She sunk both free throws with less than five seconds to tie it once again at 53.
Â
With no timeouts, Waldon got the inbounds pass and dribbled down the court and pulled up after crossing the halfcourt line, banking in the heave.
