Camels fall to No. 7 Gonzaga

SPOKANE, WASH. – Campbell stayed in the fight for 40 minutes in a 98-70 defeat at No. 7 Gonzaga Wednesday night inside The Kennel. Campbell trailed the 'Zags by only 10 with less than 10 minutes to play.

The loss drops Campbell to 5-6 on the season, while Gonzaga moves to 11-1.

Braden Huff led all scorers with a career-high 37 on 16-18 from the floor for Gonzaga. He paced four Bulldogs scoring in double figures.

Dovydas Butka drew a tough assignment against the 'Zags tall front court, but still put up a team-high 19 points. DJ Smith added 18 for Campbell, knocking down three three-pointers on the night.

The Camels had no answers for Huff in the first half, who had 26 points on a perfect 12-12 shooting before the break. His frontcourt partner, Graham Ike, added 14 and eight rebounds in the first half as well to help Gonzaga go to the half up 55-36.

Campbell slowed the duo in the second half and lost the second half by only nine points. Smith scored 12 of his 18 in the second, including the free throws that cut the deficit to 10 with 9:35 to go. The Camels could never reach single digits, as the 'Zags responded with a three on the next possession, and pushed the lead back to 20 with five minutes left.

The 28-point margin of defeat was the closest any of GU's three mid-major opponents this year, and closer than both Kentucky and Maryland played the 'Zags as well.

Chris Fields Jr. continued to work on the glass and finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Gonzaga's length caused the Camels some problems and forced CU into 20 turnovers, leading to 32 Bulldog points. Gonzaga shot 5-11 from downtown and finished with 64 points in the paint.

Campbell shot 39% from the floor and just 5-23 from downtown. The Camels and Bulldogs both attempted 24 free throws on the night, with Gonzaga hitting two more (17 to 15).

Campbell heads halfway home with a stop in Minneapolis to face Minnesota this Sunday. Tip-off in the Twin Cities. Is set for 6pm ET on the BigTen Network.
