BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's comeback bid fell short, falling 15-10 to High Point Saturday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Campbell (1-1) trailed by as many as nine in the third quarter before outscoring High Point (1-1) 7-2 to cut the deficit to just four goals with 8:08 left in the final period.Â
Both sides went nearly four minutes without scoring before the Panthers' Bella Germani notched a goal with 4:39 left. Delaney Nicolaus scored her second goal of the day with just over two minutes to go but the Camels failed to get any closer.Â
High Point jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter and led 10-2 at halftime. Campbell outscored the Panthers 8-5 in the second half.Â
Shannon Smith led the Panthers with four goals and one assist while both Germani and Esprit Cha notched hat tricks and Allie Connally totaled two goals and four assists.Â
Sam Bischoff led the way for Campbell with two goals while Rasa Welsh dished out two assists and scored twice on her sister and High Point goalie, Ava Welsh. Nicolaus scored twice while both Lexi Goff and Paige White both added one goal.Â
High Point's Welsh made 12 saves in goal while Helen Bartman, Emine Luznar and Alana Lepore combined for seven saves. Kendall Wilson, Carson Shoop and Luznar each had two caused turnovers, with Shoop scooping up three ground balls.
Connally and Julia Dustin each totaled two caused turnovers for the Panthers.
The Panthers held a slight 34-31 edge on shots but both sides finished with 22 shots on goal each. Campbell won the overall draw control battle 16-13 as well.
Campbell wraps up its three-game homestand on Wednesday as it hosts Radford at 4 PM.Â
