Georgia Southern defeats Campbell in extra innings, 6-5

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Daniel Haab's 10th inning solo home run lifted the Georgia Southern Eagles over the Campbell Camels in game one of the series, 6-5, Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The home run was the final blow in a back-and-forth game between the Camels (3-6) and the Eagles (5-4) that saw CU bounce back from a 2-0 deficit late in the game.

GS forced extra innings with three runs in the top of the ninth, all unearned. Jett Music (1-1) took the mound with a runner on first and no outs. He struck out his first two batters before allowing a single to JP Herrholz, putting runners on first and second.

On a 2-2 count, Cade Parker hit a slow roller to the shortstop, causing a rushed throw and a fielding error by the first baseman. Pinch runner J.C. Peacher came around to score to cut the lead to 5-3.

The nine-hole hitter for the Eagles, Luke Odden, drew a walk to load the bases. Josh Tate hit an infield single to bring home Herrholz, and Nico Senese followed that by working an eight-pitch at-bat into a walk, bringing home Parker to tie the game.

Tate, Georgia Southern's leadoff batter, led the team with two hits and two RBI.

Jax Lewis (1-0) pitched 4.0 innings out of the bullpen for the Eagles, earning his first win of the season. He allowed three earned runs while striking out six batters.

Andrew Schuldt led the way for the Camels, driving in all five runs with home runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put CU up, 5-2. The long balls were Schuldt's first of the season. It also marks the first time this year a Camel batter had two home runs in the same game.

Darnell Parker Jr. had another strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot and drawing one walk.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead with runs in the third and fourth innings. Tate hit a sac fly to right in the third, and Sean Smith hit a solo home run in the fourth off Campbell starter Jake Murray.

Kade Grundy got the start for the Eagles, and both starters pitched 5.1 innings with two earned runs each. Murray had eight strikeouts to one walk, and Grundy punched out five while allowing three walks.

The momentum began to shift towards the Camels in the top of the sixth inning, when Eagles head coach Rodney Hennon was ejected from the game for persistent disputing with the umpire. Haab laid down a sac bunt, and what would have been a throwing error advanced the three runners an extra base.

After discussion, the umpires called Haab out on the play for obstructing the throw, and the other two baserunners were returned to their original starting locations. Schuldt's game-tying home run came in the bottom of the frame.

Peyton Brown and Bryce Schares also pitched in relief for the Camels, going 1.2 and 1.0 innings, respectively.

Will Robbins earned the save for GS, his first, by getting the final two outs in the tenth inning.
