BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels scored two runs in the ninth inning, but their rally came up just short Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium, as they fell to No. 24 Coastal Carolina, 5-4.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the ninth,
Darnell Parker Jr. laced a single up the middle, scoring
Jackson Thompson.
In the ensuing at-bat, Parker stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error from the Coastal catcher while
Lukas Schramm scored from third base. A strikeout from Scott Doran ended the threat from the Camels and earned him his second save of the season.
Campbell (8-12) withstood early scoring from the Chanticleers (16-5), who scored two runs in the first and one in the second, all produced by the top of the Coastal lineup.
An RBI single from Sebastian Alexander and an RBI groundout from Blake Barthol scored the first two runs. Dean Mihos scored on an RBI single from Caden Bodine in the second frame.
Starter
Jackson Roberts was replaced after throwing the first two innings and facing two batters in the third. He was given the loss, and his record sits at 2-2. CCU starter Matthew Potok went three innings, and the win was awarded to reliever Dominick Carbone (2-0) for his 1.2 shutout innings with three strikeouts and no hits allowed.
The Campbell bullpen had another solid combined outing, allowing zero hits and only one baserunner in the third-seventh innings. The lone baserunner in the fifth inning was subsequently caught stealing.
Jett Music was first out of the pen, and he was followed by
Lleyton Grubich,
Drew Siegner,
Ethan Snyder and
Bryce Schares.
Campbell scored their first run of the game in the fifth inning. Schramm was first on the bases with a two-out triple to left field that was just out of reach of a diving Alexander. Parker Jr. brought him home with an infield single that took an awkward bounce and kicked off the knee of the shortstop.
The Camels scored again in the sixth inning with an RBI groundout from
Joey Morton to score
Jonah Oster, who led off the frame with a double to left.
After a scoreless seventh from both teams, Coastal added a run in the eighth inning on a single from Wells Sykes, their first hit since the third inning. He scored Walker Mitchell, who was hit by a pitch and stole second base.
Coastal added the all-important insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Barthol.
