BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Georgia Southern took the series against Campbell by winning on Sunday afternoon, 14-11, in an impressive offensive showing at Jim Perry Stadium.
Â
The Eagles (6-5) totaled 16 hits and the Camels (4-7) had 14, but costly errors proved to be a deciding factor. Campbell gave up four unearned runs to just one for Georgia Southern.
Â
In a reversal of roles from yesterday's game, the Eagles scored in all but two innings. They put constant pressure on the Campbell pitching staff, as seven of their 16 hits went for extra bases, including four triples and an inside-the-park home run in the ninth inning.
Â
David Rossow started on the mound for the Camels, and he gave up three runs (two earned) in his 1.2 innings.
Evans Hendricks (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Camels after giving up the go-ahead runs in the third inning.
Â
Brady Pendley (1-0) earned the win for the Eagles, going 3.2 innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts. Davis Smith earned his first save of the year by pitching the final three innings.
Â
Darnell Parker Jr. had another strong performance in the leadoff spot in Campbell's lineup, going 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBI and a walk.
Andrew Schuldt had a double and drew two walks to continue his strong performance at the plate in the series.
Â
Georgia Southern had everyone in its lineup record at least one hit, and the two through five hitters all recorded two or three hits. Each team recorded only five strikeouts, and both squads had five RBI with two outs.
Â
Sean Smith hit an RBI groundout in the first to score Josh Tate, opening the scoring early.
Jonah Oster answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to put the Camels up, 2-1.
Â
The Eagles answered back with two runs in the top of the second on RBI singles from Cade Parker and J.C. Peacher.
Â
Momentum began to shift in the bottom of the second. Campbell's first two batters reached as
Joey Morton led off the inning with a double, and
Jett Music reached on a fielding error from the shortstop to put runners on first and second.
Â
The Camels attempted to execute a double steal, but Music was thrown out at second on a close play. The play was reviewed and the call stood. Campbell coach
Chris Marx argued the call and was ejected.
Â
Morton came around to score on a wild pitch, but a strikeout and batter's interference call ended the inning with the teams tied.
Â
GS plated four in the top of the third to build on their momentum. Daniel Haab led off the inning with a triple, and Sean White reached on a walk. Nico Senese brought both runners home with an RBI double, and Parker reached on a bunt to put runners on the corners.
Â
Luke Odden executed a sacrifice bunt to score Senese, and later in the inning, Peacher brought Parker home with an RBI groundout.
Â
Odden recorded another RBI in the fourth to put the Eagles up, 8-3, before the Camels scored two in the bottom of the frame. Parker Jr. and Oster hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut into the Eagles' lead.
Â
JP Herrholz added yet another run for the Eagles with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning after Peacher led off the frame with yet another triple for GS.
Â
Hendricks and
Lleyton Grubich combined for most of the time out of the bullpen for Campbell, going 1.1 and 4.0 innings, respectively.
Ethan Snyder and
Drew Siegner also saw time out of the pen, throwing the eighth and ninth innings for the Camels.
Â
Grubich held Georgia Southern scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, and Campbell made a run with three runs in the seventh to cut the lead to just one run.
Â
With two outs,
Joe Simpson singled up the middle to score Music and Morton. Simpson then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an infield single by Parker Jr.
Â
Parker Jr. went on to steal second base, but his momentum carried him past the bag and the GS defender maintained the tag, ending the inning.
Â
Georgia Southern added three runs, all unearned, in the eighth inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Odden hit a fly ball to left field that Schuldt dropped. Both runners scored, and Odden scored as the next batter, Tate, knocked a double to left center.
Â
Schuldt hit a ground-rule double in the bottom of the frame, but was the only Camel to reach base in the eighth.
Â
The Eagles scored yet another two runs on a ball hit to center field by Herrholz. The ball landed in front on
Dalen Thompson, but a big hop took it over his head all the wall to the wall. Herrholz and Smith, who singled earlier in the inning, both came around to score.
Â
Down to its final two outs, Campbell created some runs in the ninth starting with a sac fly from
Wilson Woodcox. Parker Jr. followed that with his home run over the left field wall to bring the Camels within three. The game finished when Oster popped it up to the first baseman in foul territory.
