Five home runs power Campbell past Charlotte in seven innings

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Campbell earned their first road win of the year in dominating fashion, beating Charlotte 14-4 in seven innings Tuesday night at Hayes Stadium. Andrew Schuldt powered the offense with seven RBI and two of the team's five home runs.

The Fighting Camels improved to 11-13 on the year, while the 49ers fell to 11-12. Campbell had timely hits, with 12 of their 14 runs scoring with two outs.

Evans Hendricks started on the mound for the Camels. He pitched his two innings in a scheduled staff day, earning the win to move him to 1-1 on the season in his first start of the year.

Wesley Jones started for Charlotte, going just one inning and facing two batters in the top of the second. He moved to 1-1 in his five appearances and two starts.

CU's big inning came in the fourth, highlighted by Andrew Schuldt's grand slam. The knock was Schuldt's second homer of the night and the first Campbell grand slam of the season. Prior to Schuldt, Lukas Schramm worked a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to record an RBI.

Before Schramm's walk, Jackson Thompson and Joe Simpson recorded singles. Those were followed by a full-count walk from Dalen Thompson to load the bases.

David Rossow was first out of the pen for Campbell. He threw one inning and faced just three batters. Jackson Roberts pitched the fourth and fifth inning, and he faced seven batters and recorded two strikeouts.

Simpson opened the scoring with his three-run home run to left in the top of the second inning. The long ball was his second of the season, and it came on the first pitch of his at-bat with two outs.

Schuldt and Joey Morton went back-to-back with solo home runs in the third inning, also with two outs. Campbell's 10-0 lead after four innings was significant, as all 10 runs came with two outs.

Darnell Parker Jr. continued his CAA-leading trend, as he recorded a HBP in two at-bats. Six of the nine batters in the CU lineup recorded at least one RBI.

Ethan Snyder faced the Charlotte batters in the sixth inning, and the 49ers scored three runs on back-to-back homers. Logan Poteet sent a two-run blast over the left field wall, and he was followed by former Camel Chandler Riley with his solo shot to right.

Freshman Jett Music padded the Campbell lead with a leadoff home run to left center to start the seventh inning. After three of the next four batters reached safely, D. Thompson was hit by a pitch to bring home another run.

The final two runs came off the bat of Schuldt and his double that hit the top of the wall, nearly going over for his second grand slam of the day.

Charlotte added one run in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run from Connor Maryniak, but Nick Biasi sat down the three other batters in his one inning of work.

The 49ers used seven pitchers out of the bullpen, highlighted by Mike Szturma and his two innings of work. In total the Niner pitching staff struck out 13 batters, but all 14 runs on the night were earned.
