BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels defeated the Texas State Bobcats in eight innings on Sunday afternoon, 15-4, at Jim Perry Stadium. The Camels took two out of three games on the weekend, securing their first series win of the season.
Â
Campbell (6-10) exploded with eight runs in the third inning to put the Bobcats (8-7) out of reach in the early portion of the contest.
Â
The first six batters of the frame reached base safely, including five hits.
Lukas Schramm led off the inning with a bloop double that landed near the line in right field, and
Darnell Parker Jr. followed with a double to right of his own to score Schramm.
Â
Dalen Thompson singled and advanced to second when Parker Jr. took third, then
Jonah Oster doubled to left to bring the two of them home.
Â
Andrew Schuldt capitalized the rally with a two-run home run to give the Camels their first five runs of the frame with no outs.
Â
David Rossow was the starting pitcher for Campbell, and he earned his first win of the season (1-2) going 5.0 innings and allowing only one baserunner. He finished with six strikeouts, no walks and only one hit, facing just one batter over the 15 minimum in the first five frames.
Â
Austin Eaton (1-2) started on the mound for the Bobcats. He went 2.0 innings, facing five batters in the bottom of the third before being replaced. He allowed five hits and six runs, all earned.
Â
The Bobcats brought in Ryan Lawton from the bullpen, and he walked and struck out a batter before allowing a single to
Jackson Thompson. Lawton was then relieved by Colby Diaz.
Â
With one out and runners on first and second,
Charlie Meglio singled through the left side of the infield to bring home one run. Meglio and Thompson executed a double steal to move to second and third, and Schramm added the finishing touches on the inning with a two-RBI single to right field.
Â
Making his return from injury and first start since Opening Day, Schramm led the Camels with three hits and four RBI. Meglio and Parker Jr. were the other Camels to record two hits, and five batters had 2+ RBI for Campbell on Sunday.
Â
CU opened the scoring with one run in the second innings. Schuldt led off the inning with a walk then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Joey Morton sent him to third on a groundout to the second baseman.
Â
Ben Karpowicz was next to bat, and he smacked a ground ball to the first baseman, who made the choice to go home with the ball. Schuldt was able to beat the throw and the tag to put the Camels up, 1-0.
Â
Texas State scored two runs in the sixth off Campbell reliever
Jett Music. Samson Pugh led off the inning with a triple to left center, and Theo Kummer singled to center to score their first run. Later in the frame, Chase Mora added another run with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left field and the bases loaded.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, Schuldt scored on a wild pitch to put the Camels in double-digits for the fourth time this season.
Â
Bryce Schares pitched the seventh inning for Campbell and went three-up three-down before Parker Jr. recorded his second RBI of the day in the bottom of the frame to put CU up, 11-2.
Â
Following Diaz, the Bobcats had five other pitchers make appearances out of the bullpen: Cameron O'Banan, Bryson Dudley, Shane Connell, Braylen Timmins and Hayde Key.
Â
The Bobcats added two runs on no hits in the eighth inning with the help of five of Campbell's six walks on the day.
Ethan Snyder came to the mound with two outs, and after walking in a run, induced a pop-up to the shortstop to end the inning.
Â
The Camels put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning by going ahead by 10 runs after the seventh. Schuldt drew a walk and
Joe Simpson singled to put two one with one out.
Â
The two runners executed another double steal, and pinch hitter
Jarrett Martin drove them home with a two-RBI single.
Â
Schramm finished his strong performance with a home run to left field, just passing inside the foul pole on a 3-2 count to score Martin and end the contest.
